I let the tears spill out of my eyes as I watch the following events unfold.

My dad pulls out a gun. Pierson reacts quick and shoves his arm up so the shot fires over their heads. Egan is shielding me before I can blink.

Noah throws a punch at Pierson. My dad aims the gun towards Egan, towards me.

I hear my voice screaming stop. I'm holding up my hand and Egan is pushing me further and further back.

I watch my dad's soul break into a million pieces when I try to shield Egan from the shot as he tries to shield me.

He holds the gun to his head. CLICK.

The ringing in my ears didn't stop when Egan threw me in his truck. It didn't stop when the detective asked me what happened or to recall the events leading up to that moment. It most definitely didn't stop on the ride back to my apartment or when Pierson and Egan begged me to speak or to say anything.

It stopped when I curled into Egan's side last night. I could hear again. What I couldn't stop was the image in my head of the trigger being pulled. The look in my father's eyes before there was nothing left of him to see.

Chapter 1

I vaguely hear the news anchor as I sit on the couch with coffee in my hands.

"Father and author Dave Evans," I glance up at the TV and see a picture of my family flash across the screen.

"Other sources say his daughter has been taken hostage by the werewolves," the anchor continues. The TV goes black and I glance over to see Pierson with the remote in his hands.

I can just Google the story later.

I sigh and set my mug down on my coffee table. I lay down on my couch and close my eyes.

It's been two days. Egan and Pierson have not left my side. Egan went out on a special errand and if I had to guess he's at Starbucks right now.

It's been hard to eat or drink anything lately and it's stressing both of them out. That and the fact I can barely string 2 words together to communicate with them.

I hear my front door open, but I keep my eyes shut.

"Again?" I hear Egan sigh, referring to the fact that I'm once again sleeping.

"Kayde," he whispers while rubbing my back. An image from the projector of Egan fills my mind and I flinch away from him and sit up.

I stare at the coffee and muffin in his hands.

"Surprise," he gently tells me while sitting next to me and offering me the muffin. I take it in my hands and stare down at it.

I love blueberry muffins. It's my comfort food when I'm having a bad day and need a Starbucks trip to lift my spirits.

"Thanks," I reply but even to me it sounds emotionless.

I glance over and watch his caramel eyes light up at the fact that I've spoken my first word today.

I take a small bite of the muffin and then place it on the coffee table.

I glance over at the two of them anxiously watching me. It's like they think I'm going to shatter if they don't hover.

I'm not ready to talk about everything that's happened. Not until I've fully processed.

The ringing in my ears starts again making me cringe. I stand up and walk into the bathroom and away from the prying eyes.
