The bullet missed.

Chills rushed down her spine at how close it was, her grip on the handle tightening. Her knuckles were white and her hand grew numb. She whipped her head back for a moment, gulping at the sight.

They were still following. Still zooming behind her, dodging the cars with ease and pointing the barrel of the gun directly towards her, their arms only wavering due to small bumps on the road. Each roar from their exhausts was only a reminder of how close they were to her. How close they were to ending her last cry for help. Each of them awaited a good opportunity to shoot, knowing not to waste a bullet in the night's air. The rain provided a small amount of shelter from them, the double edged sword that could get her killed too if she wasn't careful.

BEEP

She gasped as a black car honked at her, she snapped her body to the left, her bike almost catching the bumper of the car. She caught a glimpse of the anger and fear in the woman's eyes, clearly cursing Katie down for driving like an idiot. The woman now watching the other 3 riders zoom past her, she went pale, what once was anger towards the rider became pity. After all, why would 3 men be chasing a small woman on bikes?

Holding her breath Katie fought to get the tyres to grip the road once again, not wanting her reckless escape to end with her body scattered on the interstate. She could feel her phone buzzing in her jacket pocket, it had been ringing nonstop since she left. It felt like a tease, like a person on the other side was doing it just to raise her stress levels, to play with her.

She knew exactly who it was.

Another bullet flew past her.

She knew if she answered it would only be a voice telling her to come back. A voice that has played her for a fool for years, taunting her to stay and making her believe it was a good idea. That she was finally safe and then torturing her.

Another bullet. Katie now pushed the bike to go a few extra miles faster, reaching the max speed her bike could go. She could have sworn the tyres were gripping the road with the surface area of a stray hair, the rain no longer felt like drops, but rather like shards of ice trying to pierce her through her clothes. The city lights glared down and reflected against the rain on the road, another obstacle to wrestle in the cold wind. She made sure to stick to an unpredictable path, wondering if the cars or bullets would grab her first. Adrenaline surged through her veins, fear and hope kept her eyes wide and body tense. It was the only force keeping her alive.

Another bullet whizzed past.

She couldn't go back.

And another. Katie could swear she felt the wind of it brush her shoulder.

She couldn't lose her freedom.

Two more this time, each feeling closer. Like she was cheating death with each breath.

Not again.

With another sound of a bullet, it all went black.
