It was around the end of the movie when Sandy came on with her black leather bodysuit.
"Holy shit-," Finney was practically drooling.
"Save it." El said elbowing his arm. "Way to old for you."
"Yeah whatever and Kenickie is way to old for you." He said rolling his eyes.
"Age is just a number." She said rolling her eyes, even though she just told Finney that Sandy was told old for him. They continued watching to movie. Swapping a few words once and awhile.
"Oh my gosh this is the best part." El said jumping up.
"I got chills they're multiplying." She sang out dramatically. "And I'm losing control. Cause the power you're supplying, it's electrifying." She began to dance. She pointed at Finney, grabbing his hands to pull him up. "Come on Finney!" She held his hands and began to dance while he stood there awkwardly. "You better shape up, cause I need a man and my heart is set on you!" She used his hands pushing him backwards just like in the movie, then he slowly started dancing with her. "You better shape up. You better understand to my heart I must be true."
"Nothin' left, nothin' left for me to do. You're the one that I want! Oo, oo, oo. You're the one that I want! Oo, oo, oo. You're the one that I want! Oo, oo, oo" Forgetting about everything, and everybody watching them. They kept on dancing, twirling and hopping around.
Backs touching each other, they yelled at the end. "You're the one that I want! Oo, oo, oo" They fell on the ground laughing. Everybody was staring at them, like they were weirdos.
"That was fun." Finney said out of breath.
"Yeah, told you it would be." El said turning on her stomach to look at the giant screen. Finn then did the same. "Hand me the gummy bears." El said reaching her hand out. Finney then tossed them over. And began eating them together.
Once awhile both putting their hands in at the same time. 'Sorry' they would both apologize. Watching the end of the movie. 'We go together, like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.' We go together played and the movie ended. Finney was smiling, he seemed to like the movie and so did El. The credits began to play, and everyone was packing up and leaving.
"So how'd you like the movie?" El asked.
"It was good. I can tell you really like the movie."
"Eh it was okay." El said jokingly. "Well it's almost ten, so we could do something else or go home."
"My dad is letting me stay out whenever. He's been really nice after we had gone missing, he's stopped drinking too."
"That's good. I should probably be home by 11:30 the latest."
"Okay, we can go to the dugout or the diner?"
"How about both?"
"Um sure I guess." They picked up their blankets and food and dropped it off at Finneys house then headed to the diner.
Summer nights was playing from Grease. If you couldn't tell anymore, everybody loved Grease. Literally everyone. The bell rung and they sat at a table. They were the only ones there which was surprising since it was a Friday night after the drive in.
The waitress came over in her tealish blue uniform.
"What can I get you two kids?" She clicked her pen and snapped her gum. She had a Jersey accent.
"Do you want food?" El whispered to Finney across the small table. He shook his head no.
"One strawberry milkshake please."
"Alright, I'll be right back." Once the waitress left Finney began to say, "1 milkshake? You don't want one?"
"No dork, we're sharing."
Finneys face was red in embarrassment and blushing. Finney hasn't really talked to a girl, or one that he liked. And he never shared a milkshake with one either.
"Oh." He tried to laugh it off while rubbing the back of his neck.
"Soo, umm, after we can hang out in the park?"
"Yeah."
The waitress placed the milkshake between them with two straws. "Here you go love birds." She said smiling. Both of the kids tilted their heads down smiling. She walked behind the counter and grabbed her box of cigarettes and headed outside.
The kids got their straws out of the wrapper and put them in the pink shake. They both put theirs in and smiled while they sipped the milkshake together. They talked about the movie, and kids they hated. Also how Matt and a few boys asked El to go to the dance even though she slapped the shit out of a few of them before. Which was not to long ago.
El grabbed Finneys hand and dropped 2 dollars in the table and ran out of the diner. She pulled him along to the park across the street, and headed straight for the swings. She sat on one and Finney sat next to her.
"So, that night. In the dugout." El said kicking the wood chips beneath her. "I had a lot of fun. And tonight too." She smiled.
"Me too." Finney kicked up wood chips. You could tell they were both nervous, but why?
"I'm also glad I got stuck with you in that dicks basement." She smiled looking at him. "I wouldn't of got out if it wasn't for you." She put a piece of hair behind her ear.
"I wouldn't of stayed sane if it wasn't for you." Finney looked at her. She smiled. "You weren't joking about the dance thing either, right?"
"Why would I joke about that? I was for real, you were for real right?"
"Yeah."
"You're being 100% for real right?"
"Yes." He said swinging back and forth.
"Oh thank God, I didn't want to be humiliated."
"Why would I humiliate you?"
"Well after everything, you're almost the most popular boy in school. All the girls are drooling over you. Like you to Olivia Newton-John. And out of all girls you picked me."
"All the girls are snobs and I don't like any of them like that."
"You have Donna, though. The most popular girl in school drooling over you. Why me?"
Finney ranted on. "I wanted to go with you, bec-because I like you, like a lot. And if you don't feel the same way that it totally fine, I just don't want to ruin our friendship because I really like hanging out with you and I-I know I sound stupid but-."El could barely understand what he was saying, he was talking so fast. She grabbed the chain of his swing and grabbed his face, pulling him into a kiss.
"Woah."
"Oh shut up." She pushed him off the swing smiling.
"So um?"
"I like you too Finney, wasn't it obvious?"
"I mean, now that I think about it."
She got off the swing and ran across the baseball field to the dugout. Finney following behind her. They had sat where they did before.
"Is that why you stormed out when Robin had asked me that truth or dare question."
She shrugged. "Maybeee." He smiled. "Oh you loser." she said pushing him.
"Mhm, I'm totally the loser." He said sarcastically.
"Hey!"
"Just saying!"
"Mhm." She giggled. "Don't you think Sandy and Danny are cute together?"
"Yeah, when they aren't fighting."
"The end was cute. Don't you think they're perfect for each other?" He shook his head yes. "I wish someone would look at me the way Danny looks at Sandy." She said looking at the stars. She was trying to hint some things to Finney. "I wish to be as perfect as Sandy." She said smiling.
"You are." Finney said after not talking for awhile.
"You're only saying that to make me feel better."
"Am not. You're perfect but in a different way, you're different, in a good way. You're El, like my El." He said looking at her. She laid her head in Finneys shoulder and smiled.
"Thank you Finney." They sat and looked at the stars. El held his hand in her lap. After a while goes passed she looks at her watch. "Shit! I forgot what time it was!" She got up and grabbed Finneys hand. She ran out of the dugout and tried to get home as fast as she could. It was 11:45 almost midnight. She was supposed to be home 11:30 the latest. They ran home to El's house and stopped at her door to catch their breath.
"I'll see you tomorrow Finney." She said as kissed him on the cheek and ran inside. He didn't get a chance to say anything, she was already inside.
