The cold tears stung his cheeks, the frosty air using them as a vessel to bight his sensitive skin, before they were flung off into the night. The man's lungs ached, both from the unusual exertion of body and the chill. Only a thin layer messily thrown over his gown to keep him warm, thus the painful tingle of his skin as it only too slowly went numb.
But none of that could match the cold that had gripped his heart, long before his body had met the outside that evening. Eyes glanced desperately back at the phone, the screen still light in his palm. His hand was moving to erratically to read the text. But he knew what it said. Reading it once was already more than enough.
Feet clumsily speed into the winter night, haggard breathing filling the air.

Goodbye
