“You’re wearing THAT?!” Maggie asked incredulously as she gawked at me from my bedroom doorway.

It was the day of the most anticipated-for Maggie, anyway-Starbucks meet up and the little diva had been nagging me for the past half hour.

“Yes, Your Highness, I’m wearing this,” I replied as I stared at my reflection on my full length mirror. I had on a pair of faded blue jeans, a black Maroon 5 shirt that I got from a concert last year, and my old pair of navy blue Chucks that were practically second feet.

“But…” Maggie started.

“But what, Maggie?” I sighed.

“But it’s ugly,” she finished blatantly.

I whirled around to face her. “Might I remind you that this,” I gestured to myself, “ugly outfit is getting you to your little date today, so try to hold back on the sass there, okay?”

“Actually, mom’s taking us there,” she replied nonchalantly.

“Yes, but if I had only thought of myself and said no to Riley, then we wouldn’t be in this situation, now would we?”

Maggie scoffed. “Admit it, Jane, you would have said yes either way.”

“No,” I replied, turning back around to the mirror. “I wouldn’t have.”

“Come on, you like him don’t you?” Maggie taunted.

“Nope,” I said as I ran a comb through my long dark hair.

“Not even a teeny tiny bit?” she persisted.

“Not even a teeny tiny bit,” I replied brusquely.

“MAGGIE! JANE! ARE WE LEAVING OR WHAT?” Auntie called from downstairs.

“Bye!” I chirped and grabbed my phone from my bed, pushed past Maggie out into the hall, down the stairs, and out the front door.

“He looks soooooo good in that SnapBack,” Maggie sighed wistfully as we turned right down the street where the Starbucks was situated and the three brothers came into view.

I snorted from the backseat. “Maggie, get it together will you? He’s just a boy.”

Auntie pulled up to the side of the road and I checked my hair through the rearview mirror as I opened the car door.

Maggie turned to me and said, “Jane, get it together will you? He’s JUST a boy.” Then she flashed me a big grin and jumped off the car.

Whatever. I always check my hair before getting out of the car.

Riley smiled at me as we walked up to them.

I smiled back.

Nope. Not even a teeny tiny bit.

“Hi, I’m Maggie’s mom,” Auntie greeted them with a pleasant smile.

The three boys shook her hand one by one as they introduced themselves.

“Thanks so much for letting Maggie and Jane come out to hang with us,” Connor said politely.

“Of course,” Auntie replied with a laugh. “I wouldn’t want to disappoint Maggie.”

Maggie stared down at the ground.

“And Jane,” Riley added, sneaking a quick wink my way.

Ugh. What is it with this boy and winking? I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes in response.
