poem one - alive

5 1 5

you're born beautiful,
you're born into life with the knowledge of
no tragedy,
no sorrows,
no pain,
no death.
-
life's breath can take everything away,
all at once;
but one does not live,
with no air?
-
if your heart stopped,
and your lungs filled with water,
right now,
would you have lived?,
and died?,
all the same?
or would you have died,
from the minute,
the world breathed into you,
a lifeline,
a salvation.
-
lifes breath,
does not prepare you,
for life,
for the in betweens,
for death.
it prepares you,
for disappointment,
without quite knowing.
-
we are born into a world of disappointment,
college dropouts,
high school pregnancies,
failed romances,
old friendships;
jobless,
homeless,
lifeless.
-
nonetheless, we pretend,
we've lived,
but tell me,
-
can you die,
if you were never truly
alive?
