"𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞,"
"Please," Brooke begged, clasping her hands together in a dramatic plea, and I simply raised a brow. "I need you this year."
I glanced around the nearly full auditorium, watching as girls stretched and warmed up. Some looked confident, others...less so. Scoffing, I crossed my arms. "I doubt that. Plus, you say that every year."
"That's because it's true." Brooke shot back, grabbing my arm and tugging me behind a wooden table.
"Is there a reason I'm helping you and not Peyton?" I asked, trying desperately to change the conversation.
"She dealing with the whole Ellie thing." Brooke narrowed her eyes and points her finger at me. "Don't change the subject. Do you see the girls auditioning?"
I sank into the chair, shrugging. "They can't all be bad."
Turns out, they absolutely could.
With each routine, my grip on sanity slipped a little more. One girl brandished a lightsaber, dramatically reenacting a scene from the latest Star Wars, while another attempted a high kick—only to end up spraining herself on the spot. It took every ounce of willpower to keep my expression neutral when all I really wanted to do was laugh, especially at the ones flailing like they'd been possessed.
Please let it be over.
"Mylah, please," Brooke pleaded when the last girl left turning to me.
Her eyes widened, and she batted her eyelashes at me, making my resolve shatter piece by piece. Groaning, I gave in. "I don't have time to learn your routines and record all of my songs for Camilla."
"You won't." Brooke rushed out, gripping my hand in a vice like grip as if she thought I would back out and honestly, I might. "I'll make you co-captain and you can create the routines so that when you can't be at practice, you already know them."
I pursed my lips, weighing the options. "I get creative freedom."
"If I say yes, do we have a deal?" Brooke asked, and I nodded. She pulled me into a crushing hug. "This is going to be so much fun."
I'm already regretting this.
"Sorry, am I too late?" A voice called out.
I turned just as a red-haired girl hurried onto the stage, slightly out of breath. "I got lost. This...new campus is totally confusing."
