Bronze elephant
Iron Horse
Steel Bull
A wild circus leaps from black and white striped tents,
metallic hooves pounding the gritty dirt,
heads swinging and ears flicking,
I feel them from miles away,
I'm shaking from miles away!
Crack!
Leather whips strike the air and performers leap from
horns to back, chests bare and hair loose,
crazed passion in their eyes.
The ring leader bares his teeth at a nickel lion,
noiseless whip flying through the air,
their speed surpasses sound,
only the sunlight glints off their backs.
Shwooo
foot uneven,
even as an outsider, I can feel the weightlessness
of slipping.
A constant shower of sweat,
droplets the purity of movement—
hair windblown and eyes wide,
I raise my camera too late,
and capture only the aftermath;
crushed grasses,
floating dust,
and the splinters of a woman-
the spirit of my photograph.
