Maybe This Time - Chapter Three

"I'm calling because I think I found something."

Ceylin noticed the worried expression on her former university professor and knew she would be scolded before he even opened his mouth to talk.

"Are you still looking into this, Ceylin?" The man's worried frown could be seen through the computer screen. "I already look old enough without you giving me more grey hair."

Ceylin smiled affectionately, touched by his concern.

"If you really must know, grey hair suits you well, Professor Sinan," the lawyer added casually, watching as his grim expression softened a little.

"You're going to drive me crazy one of these days," the man checked his surroundings as if he wanted to make sure no one could hear them before looking back at his former student. "Don't you realize the risk you're taking by messing with these people?"

"I do," the lawyer sighed, aware of the seriousness of her situation. "But try to see it from my perspective. If I don't find the evidence to punish the people who attacked me, I'll spend the rest of my life looking over my shoulder," she explained before pausing her speech to take a deep breath. "The only thing is..." the lawyer hesitated, knowing she was tackling a complicated subject, "I'm starting to think that someone at Tigris might be involved in this," Ceylin confessed, biting her lower lip in anticipation.

Tigris was the law firm her old professor worked for. Ceylin had spent the past two years as an employee at the prestigious company after Professor Sinan offered her a position as a senior attorney in the corporate law department, which he was the head of.

"That's preposterous, Ceylin," the man replied with annoyance. Ceylin figured he would feel that way. After all, her former professor had been working at the company for many years and was very close to its director. "How could you even consider that?"

Ceylin knew she had no concrete evidence to support her suspicions, only conjectures. Therefore, there was no point in trying to convince Professor Sinan since she was still reluctant to believe in that possibility herself. The best thing to do would be to share the details of what she'd discovered with her former boss. Two heads could think better than one. And with all his experience, the professor could give her some advice. It definitely wouldn't be the first time.

"Here," she held up a paper sheet on which she'd sketched a diagram connecting several companies, "I'll go through this with you."

Ceylin spent the next few minutes summarizing the connections she'd made during the nights she'd spent awake in her office with nothing but her computer.

Opposite to when she ran her private office in Istanbul, Ceylin never had to seek out clients in Ankara, seeing as Tigris received a sizeable demand spontaneously. Ceylin worked on the cases assigned to her by Professor Sinan, who in turn reported directly to the firm's director, a much older lawyer of Greek origin.
