Is This Love?

Time came to a standstill. The boisterous sounds of hormone fueled youth were reduced to mere whispers. The rays of light filtering into the hall from the windows all converged on one elegant beauty whose smile was warm enough to melt ice caps. Her eyes were green and brown speckled gems glittering in the light. Duka's heart pounded inside his chest and his eyes were filled with only her.

"Simply beautiful."

Spaz and Hector turned to look at the smitten look on Duka's face. They both shivered as goosebumps dotted their skin.

"What the hell's wrong with him?" Hector asked.

"Yeah," Spaz rubbed his arms. "Gross."

Mitchell shook his head. "My dude is in love."

"Love?" Hector's shaggy brows went up to his hairline.

Spaz sucked his teeth and unwrapped a blow pop. "What he know bout love?"

"More like puppy love."

Duka rolled his eyes. "What do you know? You jump from girl to girl."

"Hey, man." Hector covered his mouth and looked around. Sure no one was watching, he let go and lowered his voice. "You don't gotta make this personal."

"Ladies and gentlemen, get to class."

The sound of the vice principal made them give up their discussion and head to the classroom before the bell. Duka kept his eyes on the little beauty until she walked away with the student council president.

"Yo, you not serious about ol' girl, are you?" Spaz asked once they were in the class.

Duka smiled in amusement. "Why not?"

"You ain't never show interest in no one before."

"That's cuz these girls all got the same thing on their minds." Duka's expression turned serious. "I'm not tryin' to be tied down in the hood."

Mitchell gave a nod. "I feel that."

"But she looks like one of them know it all girls that come from money," Hector's nose wrinkled.

Duka gave a slight hum and took out his notebooks. He clicked his pen and planned to pay attention to the lesson. "She's still human. That's all that matters."

"Gentlemen, care to enlighten the class?"

Too late.

The teacher's words ended their conversation. Spaz turned to the teacher with a smirk.

"Ya'll not ready for the knowledge bombs I be droppin'."

Half the class sucked their teeth and rolled their eyes. Most laughed. A few were like Hector and Duka and told him to shut up. The teacher was unimpressed and went back to his lesson.

By the time the last period rolled around, Duka was dying to go home. Why was school so boring? The last class of the day for him was a study hall. When he didn't have homework he would just sleep. This day, he interrupted his usual habits.

The beauty transfer student was talking to the teacher with the class president. The light from the window shone on her alone making her angelic in the warm glow. Her smile lit up her entire face making her more ethereal in Duka's eyes. He forgot how to walk and stood watching her every move.

His heart was bumping hard against his ribs and Duka put a hand over his chest trying to slow it down. His classmates filed into the classroom and walked around him, ignoring the young man who suddenly turned into a statue.

As if she felt the weight of his gaze, the young woman turned in his direction. She smiled and gave him a small wave.

Duka felt heat rush into his face and a silly smile appeared on his face. He gave an awkward wave back but kept watching even after she turned away. Someone bumped into him bringing him out of his stupor.

"My bad, yo. You good?"

"Yeah. I'm good, bro." Duka bent down to pick up his bag that had been knocked down and headed to his seat. What the heck was that? He flopped in his seat and started texting his group.

Big D. :Yo that girl's in myy class. 😲

Game Kang🎮: Who dat?

😎Everyone is beneath me: From the hall?

Big D.: Yuh

⚡Spaztastic⚡: Ayyyyy. 🕺🏾

Big D.: What does it mean when you freeze in your tracks and your heart is beating a mile a minute?

⚡Spaztastic⚡: Someone scared you?

😎Everyone is beneath me: Jeez you're slow.

Game Kang🎮: You in love, my boi.

"Excuse me."

Duka's head jerked up. His heart nearly flew out of his chest as he glanced into the eyes of the woman he'd been smitten over.

She smiled and put her hand on the back of the chair beside him. "Can I sit here?"

What a beauty. Even her voice was pleasant to listen to. The light seemed to follow her and illuminate her wherever she went. An invisible wind blew her hair around her face making her more alluring. For a moment Duka forgot to breathe.

A light cough woke him up.

He shook his head to clear the fantasy and cleared his throat. "Yeah. Of course." Although there was plenty of space, he still scooted his chair over to give her more room. The teacher began the to tutor those that needed help.

Feeling like an idiot, Duka cursed himself and looked down at his phone. Spaz was talking crazy in the chat so Duka closed the app and turned his phone off.

Tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, she extended her hand. "My name is Tina."

"Hi. I'm Duka." An indescribable feeling washed over him as he held her hand. They were smaller and softer than his own. This person was probably a spoiled princess at home. Duka began to imagine what those hands must feel like on his body. Realizing his thoughts, he released her hand after a slight pump.

Her smile widened as she retracted her hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Same." He wrote a few lines on his homework before speaking again. "So what school did you come from?"

"Greenlyn Pines High."

He frowned and looked up at her. That was a very pricey school. The top of the top. "Isn't' that a private school?"

"Yes." She looked into his eyes with a warm smile. "I wanted to try something new."

Duka's smile couldn't be put away. "I got you."

They chatted the entire study hall session and at the end, Duka got her number. They chatted and text every day. A week later he announced to his friends that they were dating.

Tina was not like the girls he was used to. She was calm and elegant. Her voice was soft when she spoke. She gave the impression of a caring and kind person to everyone she met. Duka's friends were confused why a girl like her was dating a guy from the hood like Duka. Not that they looked down on their boy. They'd seen enough 'uptown girl dating a guy from the wrong side' to know it wouldn't last. They didn't want to see their boy hurt.

Duka couldn't see it. He was enamored with his first love. He became those sappy, lovesick fools on tv that they joked about. Around Tina he was a completely different person. He still ran his weed on the side but his time with his friends was less. Tina loved him as much as he loved her. After his first time with her, he brought her home to meet his older siblings.
