Hiccup's POV

A drawn map of the island, covered in X's. I look up from it and peeks over a gorge, expecting to see a dragon. When I see nothing but trees I add another 'X' to the page, then scratches my pencil over the whole map in frustration. I snap the book closed and pocket it.

"Uggh, the gods hate me. Some people lose their knife or their mug. No, not me. I manage to lose an entire dragon." After I say that I whack a low-hanging branch.

It snaps back at me, hitting me in the face. I look up to see a snapped tree trunk. My eyes follow it to a long trench of up-turned earth. I follow it to a downed, black dragon and purple dragon both of their bodies and tails tangled in a bola. Both of them appear to be dead. I approach the dragons, beaming.

"Oh wow. I did it. I did it. This fixes everything." I say smiling. "Yes!" I said striking a victory pose, planting my foot on the fallen Night Fury. "I have brought down this mighty beast!" I said before both of the dragons suddenly shift.
"Whoa!"  I said springing back, terrified. I turn my blade on both the dragons.

Rattled, I creep along the length of the weak, wounded dragons, dagger poised to strike. As I reach the head of the night fury, I find the Night Fury staring coldly at me. I try to look away, but I'm drawn back to its unnerving, unflinching stare. With the dragon safety tangled in the ropes, I jab with
my dagger, puffing myself up with false bravado.

"I'm going to kill you, Dragons. I'm gonna cut out both of your hearts and take them to my father. I'm a Viking. I am a VIKING!" I say shouting the last word.

I raise the dagger, determined to prove my Vikingness. The dragon's labored breathing breaks my clenched concentration. I open an eye, uncertainty leaking through. The dragon holds the stare. Something profound is exchanged between us. Finally, the Night Fury closes its eye and lowers its head, before covering its wings, the best it could with the rope still around it, around the purple dragon that I've never seen before, seemingly trying to protect it before resigned to its fate. I tried to go through with it, holding the dagger aloft... fighting myself... until finally lowering it with a frustrated sigh.

"I did this." I said looking over the dragon's chaffed rope wounds.

I turns to leave but pause. And glances back at the dragons, heaving chests. I grumble knowing I'm about to do something stupid. I check over my shoulder to ensure that no one is watching... then I hurry back to cut the ropes. The Night Fury's eye shoots open. With the dragons watching my every move, I hurriedly saw through the bola ropes with my knife.
As the last rope falls free, the Night Fury suddenly pounces. In a blur, the dragon is upon me, pinning me down, grazing my neck. The other dragon gets up with something that looks like a human but I'm to preoccupied looking at the Night Fury as it looks like it's about to kill me. I'm paralyzed as the dragon's breath ruffles my hair. I open my eyes to find the Night Fury's wolf-like stare boring into me. The exchange between me and the dragon is intense and profound. The dragon draws a deep breath, as though it's about to torch me, which makes me panic even more, but it then lets out an ear-piercing roar instead. It turns and takes flight with the other dragon who looks to have a human in its claws, flapping violently through the canopy of trees. Both of the dragons bashes against a nearby mountain side the purple one making sure that the human is safe, they both recover and drop out of view some distance away. Winded, I struggle to my feet. I stagger a few steps,  and then collapses to my knees, and faints.
