"Hi, my love", you said, hugging your boyfriend when he opened the door.
"Hello".
"What should we do today? Movie? Go out for dinner? Cuddles?"
You were walking towards the sofa and couldn't see how stiff and uncomfortable Julián looked.
"All of the above?", you asked, turning to look at him smiling until you saw his expression. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah, a bit tired. And I didn't know you were coming today".
"I thought I would surprise you", was he not happy to see you? "Did you have any other plans?"
"No, but I thought you would".
"What is that supposed to mean, Julián?"
"Nothing. I'm just...maybe we can stay home. I don't feel like going out".
"Of course. I just want to spend time with you. I don't care where".
His attitude still confused you but maybe he was being honest. You were also grumpy when you were tired.
After dinner, you two moved to the sofa to watch a movie. But you couldn't concentrate on it at all. You could only think about how cold Julián was towards you. It almost seemed like he didn't want you to hug him, so you ended up just sitting next to him after his rejection. It was so different from his usual behaviour. Physical touch was your main love language, so his attitude hurt more than it would for other people.
"I'll go home now", you said when the movie was over.
"You're not staying?"
"What for, Julián? So you ignore me some more?".
"I wasn't ignoring you", he tried to defend himself, but it was a weak argument he didn't even believe.
"Whatever. Just let me know when my presence will actually be welcomed. I don't enjoy being with people who don't want me there".
You tried really hard not to sound hurt but it was almost impossible.
Julián just let you leave and then stared at the door, thinking about how to do this. His feelings were hurt too but he didn't know how to tell you about everything that was going through his mind without hurting you in the process. So he stayed quiet and kept those feelings to himself.
And we all know how well things end when one keeps their feelings to themselves.
**
Julián had been insecure about your relationship since the very beginning.
First because of how fast everything happened. He met you a couple of days after arriving in Manchester and even though you both talked about taking things slow, your feelings were too strong and you decided to act on them. Why wait?, you told him. And he agreed.
Making your relationship public didn't help much. You kept on getting abuse on social media and whenever he posted photos with you, he got mean comments as well. She wouldn't be with you if you weren't a footballer...what if that was true? Looking at photos of you together, or simply looking at you, made him feel maybe those comments had a point. He didn't feel good enough for you. No matter how much you reassured him.
The biggest point of contention for his fans was your best friend, Pat. Because he happened to be a man and everyone liked to make a big deal out of it. As if men and women couldn't just be friends.
Julián understood that and was okay with it...at first. He wasn't necessarily jealous of your friend but was getting tired of people telling him you were cheating on him every time you posted a simple story with Pat. He knew it was stupid to be jealous, but his mind played tricks on him.
