A wave transfers information and energy WITHOUT transferring matter.
The frequency of a wave is how many complete waves travel through a point per second.
There are two types:
(Note: A typical exam question is to state the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves.)
1)Longitudinal waves-These travel as vibrations to the direction of travel. Examples of longitudinal waves are;sound, p-waves, a drum beat and a bird song.
2) Transverse waves- Transverse waves travel in right angles to the direction of travel. Examples of such waves include; S- waves, all EM waves and ripples on a pond.
