Characters are the fiction-writer's most important tools. Characters are (usually) sentient beings that the reader (who is also (usually) a sentient being) can relate to. They have wants, fears and aspirations. It is the actions, reactions and interactions of characters that drive stories forward. ~ Ezn

Matching the characterization is a unique problem to Fanfiction. You have to be very familiar with the source material or give a fuck how accurate you are.

All characters in a story should be created with a purpose. If their purpose is to be a self insert, that doesn't count.
It may not sound like it, but round characters, meaning ones with good traits, flaws and a clearly defined character, are easier to write.
