The story continues! We now follow Kyojuro, Gandalf, and the Company through the events of An Unexpected Journey. Please keep in mind that I haven't seen The Hobbit in a long time, so some details may be wrong. Please enjoy!!
Kyojuro's POV
I have now been in the Shire for six months. I loved it here! The grass and trees were green, the people were kind, and the food was delicious! It didn't take me long to adjust to the habit of eating seven meals a day.
I had up ended staying semi-permanently in Mr. Baggins' (or Bilbo, as he insisted I call him) house.
Bilbo possessed a vast library that he let me peruse at my leisure. This helped me learn more about the world I had come to live in until my task was completed.
I was surprised I was able to read the strange script, but I accounted it as another unexpected change to help me blend in.
On the day before the sixth-month anniversary of my arrival, everything changed.
The day began like any other. I was about to walk outside after cleaning up Second Breakfast. Bilbo had already gone outside to begin his usual morning smoke. I was passing a window near the front door, when something caught my eye.
I looked out, curious.
It was a strange man. He was about seven feet tall, and he wore a pointed grey hat and voluminous grey robes. He appeared to be talking to Bilbo.
Curious, I ventured outside.
"...morning to be good on."
I only caught the last part of what the stranger said.
The man glanced at me with shrewd blue eyes, but he did not remark on my presence. I walked over and stood next to Bilbo, who seemed at a loss.
"I suppose I mean all of them at once," he said hesitantly.
He seemed oblivious to my presence.
The man gave a considering hum.
Bilbo looked around helplessly, and finally noticed me. He gave me a vague gesture for help.
"Greetings! I am Kyojuro Rengoku. I am a guest of Mr. Bagggins here. Might I inquire as to how we can be of assistance?" I stepped in.
The strange man gave me a long look.
"I am looking for somewhere to share in an adventure," he said, raising a single eyebrow.
A tingle went down my spine. Something told me this conversation was important.
Bilbo's pipe fell out of his mouth in disbelief. Hobbits (save for the Tooks) didn't much care for adventures, and preferred to stay cozily in their Hobbit holes.
"A-an adventure," he stuttered. "Now I don't imagine anyone West of Bree would have much interest in adventures."
The man only stared at him with a shrewd look.
I was still pretty much ignored.
Clearly unnerved by the stranger's silence, Bilbo continued to speak, rising to his feet.
"Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner?" Bilbo chuckled.
He had evidently decided now was a good time to check the mail.
He pretended to be engrossed with his task, trying to ignore the stranger. Unnerved by the silence, he puffed his pipe and spoke again.
"Well...good morning!"
He turned to go into the house, nervously gesturing for me to follow.
I briefly looked at him and shook my head, before turning back to the stranger, who let out a grumble.
"To think I should live to be "good-morninged" by Belladona Took's son, as if I was selling buttons at the door."
Both Bilbo and I turned to him in shock. How did he know Bilbo?
"I beg your pardon?" my friend said.
"You've changed, and not entirely for the better Bilbo Baggins," the stranger continued.
"I'm sorry do I know you?" Bilbo asked in shock.
The grey-clad man seemed rather irate that Bilbo didn't remember him.
"I'm Gandalf!" he declared. "And Gandalf means...well...me."
That didn't make any sense to me, but Bilbo suddenly brightened. I realized that he must have remembered the man.
"Gandalf! Not Gandalf the Wizard who had such excellent fireworks! Oh! We used to have them on Midsummer's Eve! No idea you were still in business." Bilbo said, puffing at his pipe.
Gandalf raised an eyebrow.
"And where else should I be?"
Bilbo didn't know what to say to that, so he kept puffing at his pipe, grunting, and making vague gestures.
The man started mumbling to himself, until he pointed his weird staff at Bilbo.
"It will be very good for you, and most amusing for me. I shall inform the others."
He turned to leave, but Bilbo, as if remembering the Wizard's business here, was having none of it. He began to stomp up the stairs while still facing Gandalf, trying to make a point.
"No...listen, we do not want any adventures here, no, not today. No... I suggest you try over the Hill...or across the Water."
Bilbo gestures for me to come inside, but I stayed where I was. I was interested in this adventure. Seeing that I wished to stay, he went inside the door, shut it, and locked it.
Gandalf gave the door a considering look, before turning to look at me.
"And who might you be, young man?"
I gave him a signature smile.
"I am Kyojuro Rengoku! I happen to be looking for an adventure. I don't suppose you could tell me about your proposal?"
Gandalf stared hard at me, then mumbled something unintelligible. He gave a firm nod, and then engraved a strange symbol on the gate.
"Very well. But, the explanation will have to come tonight, as I do not have the time to explain now. The others will be by tonight."
With that, he turned and left.
I made to call him back, curious as to who was coming, but he vanished.
I smirked a bit.
He reminded me a little of my master, as well as Giyu.
I went back inside, where Bilbo was trying to calm himself down. He was pacing, and muttering under his breath about "crazy Wizards" and "stupid adventures."
I smiled and shook my head.
"Don't worry, Bilbo! I'm sure it'll all be fine!"
He whirled around to look at me.
"And what were you doing, talking to him?!" he yelled.
I blinked, not expecting the animosity.
Bilbo's eyes widened, and he promptly apologized.
I shook my head, my usual smile still plastered on my face.
"It's quite alright! To tell you the truth, I have been looking for an adventure since I arrived here. Something tells me this is the one I need to join."
Bilbo frowned at me, then apparently decided not to press.
By the time dinner came around, he had quite forgotten about the incident.
As for myself, I couldn't get it out of my head. It was finally time for me to start my task.
At dinner time, Bilbo and I were about to finished our meal of fish, when we heard a knock at the door.
Bilbo frowned, irritated that his dinner had been interrupted.
I jumped to my feet.
"It seems we have some guests!" I exclaimed.
Both of us went to open the door, revealing a strange sight.
It was a man. He was short, possibly shorter than Shinobu, but bulky and strong. He had a large brown beard, but his head was bald. He was clearly dressed for travel, and was carrying an axe. He looked like a fierce warrior.
I was brought out of my thoughts by a bow.
"Dwalin, at your service."
