THE LATE AUGUST AIR STICKY against her skin, the slight breeze rippling through her hair, all Alex could think about was running.

Running away from here, towards the ocean, away from anyone. Running through the crowd, pushing past all these people pretending to have cared about her father. There was an older woman crying over the blown-up photo of George, even though Alex knew they had never even met. Her skin crawled, molten anger heating up her chest.

How dare she? How dare that woman pretend that this affected her in any way? Alex was the one who had to live without him, who knew what had happened to him but wasn't believed, who had seen him....Alex bit down, grinding her teeth, her frustration rising up her neck in what felt like itchy, uncomfortable scales. How dare that woman cry?

She wanted to run.

Maybe if she found an opening in the hoard of people, maybe if she timed it right, she could━

"Alex? Is that you?"

All at once the hot hum of fury in her bones was replaced by a cold ache. She turned towards Jenna's voice, her knees nearly crumpling out from under her at the sight of her little sister.
