THE FLYING FISH CAME TO life with a stuttering engine that would've been alarming if Alex wasn't already in such a bad mood.

"So, what were you doing all the way out here?" JJ's asked, sticking his head into the cockpit.

"I got a little guide out in Saint Vincent." Jimmy responded. "I was spotting fish."

"What were you spotting?" JJ pressed him.

"You know, the usual." Jimmy turned some knobs and pulled some levers. "Wahoo."

JJ froze, shifting his eyes to John B, who gave a slight shake of his head.

Alex glanced at him. "What?" She hissed, her voice muffled under the sound of the engine.

"There's no Wahoo in September." JJ said, ducking his head down so only she could hear.

Jimmy was none the wiser. "I'd hang onto something. Gets a little spicy on takeoff."

Alex sucked down a breath. "So he's lying?"

JJ nodded. "Or he's stupid."

"Plausible."

Suddenly, the plane rocked forward, sending them both flying into the aisle.
