Determination & Ideas

Sophie's heart felt like it had dropped to the pit of her stomach and stopped its steady rhythm.

She dug the bottom half of her face under the covers, only keeping her eyes and above visible.

She mumbled something far too quietly and quickly for anyone to hear.

"Pardon?"
Magnate Leto asked, nervously slicking his hair back.

She gulped, forcing her throat to clear and pushing the mucus down.

"What did he look like?"

"In the photo."
She clarified.

Her voice was shaky, and tears of rage and fear brimmed her eyes.

"I- I'm not sure if it's the best idea to describe this right now-"
Magnate Leto tried to reason, but Sophie cut him off.

"Tell me."
She wasn't joking around. She glared at him, her eyes of daggers and demand.

And she betted that he could see the fire brewing in her soul and the rage pitting in her stomach by the flames in her eyes.

Leto looked taken by surprise.

"W-well...he..."
He stammered, obviously struggling to gather the correct words.

"He was pale and his eyes were wide. He didn't seem to notice the surveillance, and he was facing in another direction, a spot where our cameras do not cover or overlap."

Of course. Because that made it better. That the cameras didn't have any view there.

But this meant it couldn't be coincidental.

This was real.

Through all of these revelations, Sophie could feel her skin paling to leave behind a ghostly figure.

There was only one option.

They had to save him.

"You said this was yesterday?"
She asked, praying for the clarification that her question was correct.

Fortunately for her, he responded with,
"Yes."

"Where?"
She scratched at her arms violently, trying to force them away from her eyelashes.

She winced from the repetitive aggressive rubbing motion, and she could feel her skin chipping away to reveal flesh and blood.

Suddenly, she couldn't scratch anymore. It was as if some force had controlled her mind, preventing her from moving her arms.

She turned her head to Grady, and he gave her a look of concern.

"Sorry kiddo. But you can't hurt yourself."

He had used his ability as a Mesmer.

Sophie wanted to be mad, but she knew his intentions were good.

So when he let his control go she placed her fingers underneath her, forcing herself not to use them.

"We located him in London."
Magnate Leto spoke.

Of course that's where he had resided.
It made so much sense.
He wanted to find out about everything his mother had done.
If only Sophie had thought of that earlier while she was sulking selfishly.
It was her responsibility to be the Moonlark.
What was she doing wasting time?
Why was she so damn selfish all the time?
That's why it was all her fault.
That's why-

Her thoughts were interrupted by someone grabbing ahold of her hand tightly, as if they thought they were going to lose her.

"Stop thinking that."
A deep voice spoke seriously.

She met Magnate Leto's intense gaze.

"Yes, I was monitoring your thoughts. I had no choice. You stopped all functions for a good minute and a half, and I needed to make sure you were going back down the guilt rabbit hole. Turns out you were, and I needed to stop you from spiraling."

Wow was she that unstable?

Good god.

A bunch of adults grabbed a hold of for dear life after his words, and Elwin went back to doing a bunch of far too useless tests.

She waved them away.

She wasn't unappreciative of their concern, but first she needed to figure out her own life.

Also...a minute and a half?

Had it really been that long?

She took a very necessary inhale, enjoying every bit of the sweet oxygen that coated her lungs.

"I'm fine. And for what it's worth...thank you."
Her voice was quiet as she directed her comment towards Magnate Leto.

He waved it off.
"No need."

"I just...need a minute to think."
She met everyone's eyes briefly before she delved deep into her thoughts.

It was clear that there was only one option.

They had to save Keefe.

And through every equation in her head to save him, only one would work.

No one would approve it, but it was worth a shot.

Plus if they didn't she would find a way anyway.

They had to go to London and search.

She didn't care how long it took.

She would remain in the forbidden cities until she found him.

She was currently just wasting away in bed.

What was she doing?

She needed to get this plan in action.

But first she needed the plan.

And though she despised the idea, Sophie had to act normal and go to Foxfire and whatever, and scheme this whole thing behind the scenes.

And she could see who wanted her support.

If she mentioned the idea to anyone anyway.

This wasn't reckless. This was spontaneous. This was smart.

She took a steadying breath, plastering a neutral face to hide her idea.

No one looked skeptical, so she was okay for now.

"Ok."
Was all she simply stated.

"Ok?"
Magnate Leto asked, suspicion now in his features.

She needed a cover so she didn't look suspicious.

She lifted the covers off of the cot, and made her face contort to a determined expression, which wasn't completely fake.

"We have to come up with a plan."

"Don't you think you should rest?"
Leto suggested.

And while she would like rest, she shook it off.

"I'll go back to school starting tomorrow. In the meanwhile we have to come up with a plan."

That's what she would be doing. Coming up with a plan with a bunch of dead ends for them so that everyone would find themselves nowhere, and then coming up with her own plan.

And hey, maybe some of the ideas they mentioned would come in handy.

Magnate Leto smiled.
"I wouldn't expect any less."

Sophie gave him weak smile, and stood up.

It was time to do what she did best.

Act and pretend.
