Y/N'S P.O.V. ~ SATURDAY
It's now been two days since I last visited Bokuto's grandpa in the hospital. I could have sworn that Bokuto told me his grandpa was coming home soon, but as far as I know, he's still in the hospital.
I decide to go check on Grandpa with the goal of hopefully expediting his release. However, when I arrive and finally find Grandpa's nurse, she explains to me that something had gone wrong with one of Grandpa's tests. Something to do with cholesterol causing a plaque buildup. The nurse tries to explain that once they can lower the cholesterol levels, they can release Grandpa. She then shows you to Grandpa's room.
When you walk in, the nurse nods to you and walks off. You then enter and see the old man lying with his eyes closed. You approach him slowly, clutching the yellow flowers you had brought for him.
"I'm not sure if you're awake or not but I'm just going to leave these here for you," you whisper as you replace the old flowers beside his bedside table.
"Y/N," he whispers, opening his eyes slowly and turning his head to you. "Why do you keep bringing me flowers? Are you trying to tell me I smell bad? Are the flowers to mask the stench?"
"No," you smile as you sit down beside him. "I just thought they'd cheer you up a bit."
"Where's Kotaro?" he then asks, changing the conversation while his eyebrows knit together in confusion. "You two usually come together?"
"I wanted to check up on you. I didn't tell him that I was coming," you shrug.
"You're not mad at him, are you? The two of you are too good for each other to be upset," he tells you.
"No," you shake your head. "I'm sure he's just busy with the diner. Like I said, I didn't want to bother him."
"You said that? Huh, don't remember that... I hope you're being honest with me, young lady. Don't break my grandson's heart. He really likes you, ya know," he grins softly.
"I'm sure he does," you reply, hoping that he's referring to your friendship with Bokuto.
Just then, the door opens and Bokuto walks into the room as if on some kind of cue. The two of you look over and see a worried look on his face.
"What's wrong, Kotaro?" Grandpa asks.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Kotaro answers, shutting the door behind him and stepping closer. You can see tears swelling up in his eyes.
"Bo, are you okay?" you ask softly.
"Do I look like I'm okay? My grandpa had a fucking heart attack and lied to my face. You said you were getting better. You said you were going to get out!"
"Ko-"
"Why did you do that? You told the staff not to tell me? I'm so damn lucky that one intern didn't know!"
"Kotaro. Life is complicated..." Grandpa tries to tell him, attempting to sit up in his bed, but failing rather weakly.
Your eyes start to water when you see Bokuto sit on the side of his Grandpa's bed and hug him tightly. "You could've died," Bokuto whispers.
"We're not out of the woods yet, kid," Grandpa huffs. "I'm glad the two of you are both here now."
Your heart drops when you hear those words leave Grandpa's lips. Is this why he wanted the two of you to be here at the same time?
"Don't be mad at Y/N," Grandpa then whispers.
"Didn't you just say life's complicated?" Bokuto sighs.
"Life's too short to hold grudges, grandson. I love you," he whispers. His hand then reaches out for yours on the opposite side. And when he holds it, he squeezes weakly. "Both of you."
Suddenly, the machine beside Grandpa starts beeping like wild. You and Bokuto look over and see the pulse line has gone completely flat.
"What's happening?" Bokuto whispers worriedly. "He's not breathing, Y/N."
"I... I don't know. I'll go get the nurse!"
When you return with the nurse, you and Bokuto are both asked to leave the room. However, he refuses to move from his spot on the bed, despite the rest of the medical staff that floods in shortly after.
As you wait in the hallway, pacing back and forth, you try to tell yourself that there may still be a chance they can bring him back. A small chance, but a chance nonetheless.
A few minutes later, a few of the professionals walk out of the room. The nurse approaches you quietly at the same time. "You can go in and see him if you'd like now," she whispers.
"So what does that mean? Did you save him or what?"
"Mr. Bokuto went into cardiac arrest. We were unable to save him. I am very sorry."
When the nurse walks off, the whole world starts to spin. You feel as though you're walking in some drunken dream as you slowly make your way into Grandpa's room.
Through watery eyes, you see Bokuto with his arms across his grandpa's cold body. "Bo," you whisper. "Is he really..."
Following no response, you sit down beside Bokuto and spend a few quiet minutes at his side.
When the nurse returns, she explains that they're going to have to move him somewhere more comfortable for now. You quietly nod at her and take Bokuto by his hand.
"Let's go," you whisper. "I'll bring you home. How'd you get here?"
"I got a ride," he says emotionlessly.
"Okay, let's go then. My house or yours?"
"Can you come to mine?" he asks, looking straight ahead as the two of you walk through the maze that is the hospital.
"Of course," you nod.
Only when you get to your car in the parking lot do you realize that you've been holding Bokuto's hand the whole time. Softly, you let go and unlock the car. He sits beside you in the passenger seat, buckles his seatbelt, and stares straight ahead.
"Ready to go?" you ask, yet there's no response.
The ride back to his house is quiet. Not a single word is said. Not in the driveway, not when he opens the door, and not even when he wraps his arms around you and hugs you tight.
