The Philosopher's Stone

Harry's first year of Hogwarts was as eventful as you've heard. Of course with some slight twists.

I'm sure you remember the philosopher's stone was being kept at Hogwarts that year under guard of various traps that the staff had volunteered. He still made friends with Ron, then Hermione after the troll incident. Harry had grown up playing with Neville before Hogwarts so his close friend group ended up being a quartet instead of a trio. However, the four of them weren't that involved with the philospher's stone, as they and the rest of the students had been informed at the beginning of the year (out of earshot of the headmaster) that it was Dumbledore's bright idea to lure the Dark Lord into the open.

Since the Dark Lord is actually dead—thanks to Lily Potter, and Regulus Black in the Department of Mysteries—there was no real danger and Minerva had definitely put some wards stronger than a simple locking curse on the entire corridor. Well...he was mostly dead. There was one horcrux that was evading them since it's difficult to tell former Death Eaters that they might have something of their old master's that could bring them back without letting on that exact thing. Knowing some of them, they would search their entire mansion to find the item and eventually succeed in bringing him back.

Now why would Nicholas Flamel allow the headmaster access to his stone for this trap? Simple. He's as senile as Albus Dumbledore if not more so...because he happens to be much older than him...not because he spends so much time with the fumes from his alchemy experiments...

The troll, as it turned out, was Pettigrew trying to cause a distraction to get in the corridor for some reason but he didn't make it past the Great Hall. Peeves seemed to have recognized him and was holding a grudge. Poor Professor Quirrell had been imperioused for the entire year and therefore required the next year and a half to recover from repeated imperious and the five years after that to recover emotionally.

"Harry James Potter, you fought a fully grown mountain troll and you wait until the school year is over to tell me?"

"Aunt Jane, Hermione was in the bathroom and was the only one who didn't know about it. What did you want me to do? Let the troll get her?"

Aunt Jane pursed her lips together in disapproval but didn't push further and let Harry continue telling her about his year. He was getting quite good at getting out of trouble with her. Harry had received his father's invisibility cloak at the hands of Minerva the Christmas before he turned eleven, something that enabled him getting out of trouble more often than not.

"Oh, alright, but don't go telling your godfather this, he has terrible impulse control as it is."

Sirius was in fact, not accused of telling You-Know-Who the whereabouts of the Potter family as there was a will that named the true Secret Keeper. He was still looking for the rat eleven years later, but he definitely was present in Harry's life. Not as often as he would have liked, of course—Wormtail led him on quite the goose chase around the country—but he was there for holidays, birthdays, and odd months throughout the year when they didn't have any leads.

"I can't wait to tell Padfoot about my score on the Defense exam. His mind is going to explode."

"Yes, I dare say he will be jealous of your score. I heard that if it hadn't been for your father, Sirius would never have passed some of his exams."

There was still a curse on the Defense position (the class has been called Defense Magic for about 70 years now, albeit Albus still calls it Defense Against the Dark Arts) but Minerva has found a way around it. She has about seven to eight teachers on rotation every year. Remus Lupin is one of them; he's scheduled for Harry's fourth year but circumstances will arise to where he will be required for Harry's third year at the last second. I will get to that later.

"Well, now that's not entirely true." Moony interjected. "James and Sirius would have failed Herbology and History of Magic if it hadn't been for me."

Remus Lupin popped up again a few years after the death of Lily and James (because Sirius forcibly brought him home after tracking him down) and has been staying with Harry and his guardian ever since. Ever since the fall of You-Know-Who, Regulus and the rest of the Department of Mysteries has been able to finish developing a much better Wolfsbane potion for werewolves that Lily had started before her death.

"Yes, I'm sure that's the true story," Aunt Jane said in a disbelieving tone. "When is Minerva getting back, Harry? She can settle this one easily."

"She said she had to make sure Professor Dumbledore was settled with his summer puzzles and everything was wrapped up for the school year before she came back. I don't think it should be much longer."

Harry and Neville were planning on an experiment with Mandrakes and unicorn tail for the summer. They were keeping in close correspondence with Hermione for her input and Ron was—

What? I thought we were done with interruptions.

I can't hear you and you're still annoying as Hades. What?

Oh, right. Finite Incantatem There. Now what?

*evil laugh* Oh, I see. I seem to have forgotten to tell you who exactly Harry Potter has been staying with this entire time.

Should I tell you now or let you stew for a while longer? I think you know the answer already anyways; I would only be confirming your suspicions.

Yes, it's Dolores Jane Umbridge.

Woah, woah, watch the language! This is a children's story! What's with all the hostility for this sweet little lady?

Not sweet? Wait, where'd you get this 'toad' idea?

Oh, wait. I know. You've been told a mix up in characters. Dolores Umbridge is a sweet, short, petite lady that's around the same age as Harry's parents...if they were alive. She is a pure blood that had started fighting for the rights of the minority once Remus came to live with her and Harry. She hadn't been aware of a lot of the problems until Remus told her. Elizabeth Boade is this despicable person you are describing. That's probably where you're getting the 'toad' business. Yes, even all the pink clothes and the 'hm hm's'. She's the one that brought out the blood quills only to be used on contracts of the highest formality. It's rare that they're brought out anymore.

Of course they're still used! They only bind one's magic to the contract! Now, study hadn't been done to show effects of prolonged use of the quill but...they didn't need to do that once Harry got to his fifth year, now did they?

I'm not going to tell you about fifth year yet! We haven't even gotten to second year!

The Chamber of Secrets? You're so hung up on Dolores Umbridge being the one to raise Harry that you don't even care that Lucius Malfoy was the one to teach his second year and not the Lockhart dude I've heard so much about.

You won't find out what happened to Lockhart if you skip from first year to fifth year!

Do I have to spell you silent again? Thank you.

Now where was I?
