A Love So Wrong

It's not a sin,
When you don't marry your own skin.
Is our love so wrong,
Even if it keeps us strong?

In a world full of chances,
Why can't I keep my stances?
"They belong to a different religion,"
But that shouldn't affect our decision.

In a world so cruel and unforgiving,
With love our heart is healing.
It is what keeps us happy,
In no way is it dirty.

Honour killing was never okay,
Keep this social evil away.
Why pluck away the wings of a butterfly,
And not accept more than what meets the eye?

This poem is about honour killing. A few months ago, I watched a movie about two youngsters who ran away from their homes due to unfortunate circumstances so that they could protect their love. The girl was from a higher cast family and the guy was from a lower cast one. They had an extremely hard time making ends meet but with a little bit of help, they managed to live a happy life and even had a kid after a few years. Skipping to the end of the story, the girl's dad found her address and fooled her into believing that he was alright with the relationship. He eventually sent his son to act like he had accepted them too and later on kill her lover and her baby in the name of "honour" while she was out buying sweets at a shop for him. This movie brought to my attention how tremendous amounts of honour killing cases are filed each year and how serious it actually is. This inspired me to write this poem. Because as per my thinking,

"Is our love so wrong if it keeps us strong?"
