A girl can rise from the ashes, and that's exactly what Helia Abbott did on the day she should have died.

Her parents, a Phoenix — Salem Abbott — and a human — Jacob Abbott — left for the country. They found that the cities were dangerous, they housed people who would kill them for what they were and who they loved. They thought escaping to the country, a small town full of nice people, they would finally have peace.

For a while, they did. They started a family. Their eldest, Ryan Abbott. Their middle, Helia Abbott. Their youngest, Nora Abbott. They were all happy in their home. They were a somewhat normal family, at least it was normal for them.

Helia for the first to exhibit her mother's Phoenix abilities. She accidentally set fire to the treehouse in the backyard when Ryan wouldn't join her tea party. After that, her mom started to teach her how to control herself. How to be careful with others.

One slip up in town caused chaos. Helia hadn't finished her training, and Ryan and Nora sent her over the edge like all siblings do. She set a store on fire. There was no inside luckily, but in daylight, each one of the townspeople saw what had happened.

Small minds made a small plan. They attacked their house, a gothic story for the years to come. Helia still felt the pitchfork in her stomach sometimes, and she had nightmares as she watched her family meet the same fate.

Their house went up in flames with the laughs of the townspeople. Helia listened as she felt the blood in her veins boil, every part of her burning and bleeding. And yet, as she took her final breath, she knew there was no ripping her from this world.

A curse and a blessing. But mostly a curse. Helia was a Phoenix when she rose from that house, when she tore those townspeople limb from limb for what they did. Their town was a crater when she was done, only ash and embers.

She watched the sky all night, blood staining her skin, matting her blonde hair. She waited for her mom to rise with her, but there was no Phoenix to join her. She was completely alone with nothing.

Until Larissa Weems found her.
