i stab my fork into my mashed potatoes, thinking about how badly i wish it was summer. i wish i was anywhere but in this dim-lighted school building.
madi sits across from me, but she isn't there right now—since she has a lot of other friends besides just me, so i sit awkwardly by myself. i rest my elbow on the table and think about my day so far, chris hasn't bothered me since our conversation in the hallway, that's a good sign—right?
i tell myself it is and slide the fork into my mouth. madi arrives back into the lunchroom with her phone in her hand, she's smiling when she sits down.
"what're you smiling at?" i ask curiously, propping my arms onto the table in front of me. madi looks at me and shakes her head. "i can't tell you that." she smiles.
