The photo was of a hedgehog family, one of which Javert recognized. He was a former prisoner at Toulon, where Javert had worked for a short while.
Though he looked much younger than Javert remembered, it was him.
And if this photo was here at this crime scene, then this could only mean one thing, this was the work of Jean Valjean, master bread Thief, and Escape Artist.

Valjean hurried through the town streets in a mad dash to escape before the police caught his trail.
He came upon a nunnery. Towering brick walls outstretched across the town, making only three options; left, right, or up.
Scaling such a wall would take extraordinary finger strength, and Valjean wasn't sure he was up to the task.
But the sound of leather boots on pavement made up his mind.
