Katherine slammed the door of her locker closed as the bell rang, signaling the 2 minutes before lessons started.
She clutched her Chemistry homework to her chest, glancing round the corridor for any signs of-
"Well, well, well..."
-the homework theives.
"Katherine, how are ya?" Ginger kid Fwhip grinned, coming to stand in front of her, blocking her escape, "More importantly- is your homework up to date?"
Katherine swallowed, pressing herself up against the lockers behind her as the rest of the homework bullys came up to her.
Jimmy grinned at her almost innocently up at her, "You did do the homework, right?"
Katherine nodded, fiddling with the plastic sleeves of her folder pulling out three homeworks and handing it to Fwhip, who's eyes where shining with delight as he grasped hold of the homework. Thankfully their ringleader didn't seem to involve herself this-
"If it doesn't give us high grades, you're done for, homework girl,"
-time.
Katherine swallowed her heart as she looked into Shelby's hard amber eyes that bought out her soft facial features, framed by black wavy hair. Katherine groaned inwardly, scolding herself:
Not right now you stupid crush. I'm slightly busy.
Fwhip and Jimmy snickered as Katherine's legs turned to jelly, forcing her to brace herself against the locker.
"See you, looser," smirked Jimmy as he Fwhip and Shelby sauntered off towards Chemistry, waving the homework that she had written and laughing.
Katherine watched them leave, clutching her folder like a life bouy, thanking the lord that she had remembered their homework.
"KATHERRRRRINE!" her best friend Gem came charging up to her, fists clenched, "I can't believe I just witnessed- you really need to stop doing their homework for them otherwise they're never gonna learn,"
"I know, but I just-" Katherine mumbled dipping her head.
"You just?" Scoffed Gem, "Get over her Katherine, all she's ever gonna do is exploit those wonderful brains of yours for her own personal gain. Now hurry up, or we'll be late,"
Luckily Chemistry was only a few doors down from Katherine's locker so she and Gem burst into the classroom fairly on time.
They muttered their apologies and disposed of their homeworks in the plastic tray before taking their seats and letting the teacher start her lesson on displacement reactions.
*
It didn't take long for Katherine to get bored. She had learned all this already due to her parents, who are very liable to panic:
Katherine, have you practiced for this test?
Katherine, is everything all right at school?
Katherine, have you done your homework?
She groaned inwardly and bent her head over her exercise book to make 'notes'.
Then their chemistry teacher's monotone voice was interrupted by a loud snort coming from the back row.
Everyone turned to the back row as the teacher asked, "Miss Evermoore, would you care to explain what you find funny about displacement reactions?"
"It's funny how the biggest elements replace the smaller elements," Shelby smirked and seemed to glance directly at me, "The smaller atoms can't stand up for themselves, its hilarious,"
"Miss Evermoore, I would appreciate you not to interrupt my lesson with animal noises," most of the class snickered, "however funny you may find it, anyways, who can tell me..."
Katherine turned back to the board, a sick feeling in her stomach. She was sure that Shelby had alluded to her and her situation with the homework thieves.
It had only started this year. The bullying for homework and the-
The other thing.
She had tried to shake it- shake the feeling, over and over and over again, but nothing worked.
Gem thought that the crush was unhealthy and she had best forget about it.
Lizzie, a cat-obssessed gypsie who hung around with them sometimes, thought it was going to be some crazy high school enemies-to-lovers sort of things.
Hell no.
"-now do some text book work so I can mark your homework,"
*
"Right class, I've managed the grade your homework."
Katherine looked up from the questions in the text book and blinked in suprise.
"I forgot it was a double lesson," groaned Joel from beside her, running a large hand through his messy hair.
"Take it home, no discussions about grades in this classroom,"
"You always forget," said Lizzie to Joel, turning round to roll her eyes at him.
"No, but I-"
The start-of-lunch bell rang shrilly over Joel's arguement and everyone scrambled from their chairs, picking up their bags and exercise books and ran for the door, collecting their homework from the teacher on their way past.
Being slow to pack up, Katherine was one of the last to pick hers up. She glanced down at the grade of the essay and smiled to herself. A 7. Not bad.
She slipped her homework into her bag and headed out of the classroom.
"Miss needs to talk to you me," Gem grabbed Katherine's arm as she made to leave the classroom, "Wait outside, I'll be with you in a bit."
Katherine dipped her head and let herself out of the classroom, leaving Gem to talk to the teacher on her own, probably about her grade or the Science Whizz Quiz that's coming up.
Katherine slipped her bag over her shoulder and turned down the corridor only to freeze, heart racing at at least 125 miles per hour.
"-the little ***** wrote me an essay that only got a 4," Jimmy's squeaky voice echoed down the corridor. Katherine paled.
"S'not like you're the brightest candle in the box," Fwhip chuckled, thumping Jimmy on the back, nearly sending him toppling over.
Shelby looked up slowly. Katherine paniced, grasping her bag straps, palms sweaty and heart pounding in her chest.
Shelby blinked and looked directly at Katherine. She didn't say anything and looked back to Jimmy, "That'd teach you to do your own homework,"
Jimmy scoffed, elbowing his friend, "You're one to talk Shelby, you're the one who thought of this whole scheme in the first place." Jimmy stared down at his essay, fuming, "Oh man, she's gonna get it-"
Katherine turned on her heels, deciding she had heard enough, just as Gem came out of the classroom.
"Katherine, guess what-!" Gem squealed.
"Not now- head down- walk." Katherine muttered to her friend, not stopping for Gem to catch up.
Gem jogged up to her, glancing over her shoulder and then grimly back at Katherine, "You...?"
"They're gonna kill me," Katherine moaned as they rounded the corner, leaving the homework thieves behind them.
Gem looked at her disappointingly, tutting under her breath, "You dug yourself that hole,"
Katherine let out an exasperated huff, "Maybe they'll forget...?"
Gem snorted, shaking her head, "Bullies don't forget."
