REAL Engines

It was morning, and everyone was saying goodbye to Mallard, and Flying Scotsman.

Soon, the two engines headed off, and Jacob had arrived back, and explained about saving Smith from Scrap.

"Most impressive," said the American Controller, "Smith shall have a new coat of paint, and maintenance done on him, and he'll be put to work soon."

Soon, all the engines were talking, and Mack, the new Class 40 diesel engine, over heard them talking.

Steven then said, "It will be nice to have another, real, engine."

Mack was confused. "I'm a real engine, aren't I?"

Next morning, Mack arrived at Masson Station, where Stacy pulled in with a passenger train.

"Hello," said Mack.

"Ah, you must be Mack!" said Stacy, "Pleasure to meet you."

"And you must be Stacy. I've heard much about you. All good things."

"Well," said Stacy, "Welcome to the railway."

"Um, may I ask you something?"

"What is it?"

"Am I a real engine?"

Stacy laughed, "You look like one to me."

"Well, would you consider steam engines as real engines?" asked Mack.

"Now who gave you THAT impression?" asked Stacy.

Mack explained what he had heard, and Stacy said, "I think they meant as a real railway. Not like the Bluebell and Talyllyn Railway, which function as Heritage Railways. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about."

Stacy then gave a warm smile, and Mack smiled as well.

Soon, the diesel left with his trucks, and went back to work.

The next day, Mack took some supplies to the works, when he heard a voice stutter, "W-Who are you?"

Mack turned to see a rusted old engine with 'scrap' written all over him.

"Oh, hello, are you that new engine?" asked Mack.

"Y-Yes I am," said Smith, "Please don't take me back to the other railway!!"

"Why would I?" asked Mack, "I work on this railway."

"Y-You do?"

"Yes. The American Controller welcomes all engines, steam or diesel. In fact, I learned everything I know from steam engines."

"I never thought I'd meet a diesel who would ever say that."

Soon, they were chatting away like old friends.

But then, Mack had to leave.

"It was nice meeting you Smith," said Mack.

"You too Mack!"

Mack then headed off.

A few days later, Mack was resting in the sightings.

"Hello there Mack," said Steven, as he rolled up along side the diesel.

"Oh, hello Steven," said Mack, "Lovely day, isn't it?"

"Listen," said Steven, "Smith is going to be on trial here, to work with us, 'REAL' engines. And we don't want you to give him a fright."

"Oh, Smith? I actually met him at the works and we-"

"WHAT!?! WHAT DID YOU SAY TO HIM!?!"

"W-We just exchanged stories and-"

"NOW HE KNOWS THAT DIESELS WORK HERE, AND HE MIGHT TRY TO RUN AWAY AGAIN!!!"

Steven then puffed off, leaving a rather hurt Mack.

Soon, Smith was put to work, shunting coaches and trucks.

However, as he worked, he could see that Mack was keeping his distance.

That night, in the sheds, Smith backed down, and saw all the engines, all except one.

"Where's Mack?" asked Smith.

"Oh, don't mind that," said Jacob, "You're better off with us real engines."

Smith was taken back by this.

"What do you mean, 'REAL', engines?" asked Smith.

"Steam Engines," said John.

"Like us," said Annie.

"You don't have to worry about diesels," said Stevenson.

Smith then left off steam like a mad bull, and said, "FIREMAN, DRIVER, DON'T DROP MY FIRE!! I WANNA SLEEP ELSEWHERE!!!"

"But-But, why?" asked Jinty.

"I was actually meant to be preserved on a heritage railway," said Smith, "But I didn't want to be surrounded by pompous steam engines! They were just as bad as the diesels back there!! Diesels said, 'We are the Future!' and the Steam engines would say, 'We are REAL engines!' It caused a huge divide, and no work was getting done! That's why I ran away to here, because I thought everyone got along!! I used Scrap as an excuse to make it work!"

Smith was fully turned around, and he said, "Perhaps I was wrong. Now, I'm going to sleep with real FRIENDS, as I'd rather have those, instead of real ENGINES!!"

Smith then puffed off, leaving a very shocked, and rather guilty, fleet of engines.

Soon, Smith was fast asleep in the goods shed with Mack and Barrow.

Smith got along well with Barrow. He actually worked with one of his brothers before he ran off.

The next day, all the engines from the sheds were there, waiting for Smith, Mack, and Barrow.

"What do you all want?" asked Smith darkly.

"We're sorry for what we did," said John.

"It was foolish of us to say we're 'real' engines," said Annie.

"We all just want to be really useful," finished Jinty.

The three engines smiled.

"We accept," said Smith, "Although, I want no more of this 'Real' engine nonsense! We are ALL real engines."

The engines all agreed, and soon, everything was back to normal.

The engines were back at work, and Smith was happy to have a new home.

And Mack, while happy to have visitors, he's always there to put a snooty diesel in their place.
