Respect for Steven

It was a busy summer on the Southern Isle. Steven was just as proud as ever. He felt he was the strongest, and cleanest engine on the whole railway.

However, there was one thing that bothered him: his firebox would often make a clanking noise when it cooled down at night. He knew that it kept the other engines up at night. One night, Steven's firebox was clanking as usual.

Robert and Belle started to chuckle.

"Clanking Steven is keeping us awake!" said Robert.

"The only engines keeping other engines awake," snapped Steven, "Are little tank engines, with very bad manners!!"

But secretly, Steven was embarrassed.

The next morning, Belle and Robert were still teasing Steven.

"Clanking Iron is awake at last!!" said Robert.

Steven just hissed steam, and puffed away. He did not like being called names. Soon, Steven was out on the mainline, puffing proudly.

"I'm the best!" he said to himself, "Fastest and Best! Fastest and Best! Finest and cleanest, and pull the express!!"

Soon, Steven pulled into Salem, where Lilith was sitting on the other platform.

"Oh look!" she said, "Clanking Steven is here! He's pulling the Rattling Express."

Talyllyn was nearby, and said, "That is no way to speak to fellow engines! You should be ashamed of yourself!"

Just then, Den pulled up with a track maintenance train.

"I hope your clanking get better," he oiled, "See you later, Old Clanker!"

Steven's face grew as red as Annie and Jinty! He decided that it was time for the other engines to respect him!

Later, at the water column, Steven pulled up ahead of Annie. Annie was surprised!

Robert was shunting Steven's coaches, when Steven pulled up.

"Off you go Little Robbie," said Steven, "Number 1 is my platform, little engines like you shouldn't dottle there."

Robert hated being called Robbie, and said, "You're a big bossy boiler!! Show some respect!!"

"You haven't shown me respect by calling me Clanking Iron," retorted Steven, "Why should I respect you?"

Robert just puffed away muttering, "Can't take a joke."

Before Steven left, he told all the engines at the station to give him a polite 'toot-toot' as they passed him, and he would give one to them.

"But why?" asked Belle. She was very confused.

"Because," boasted Steven, "I'm the fastest, and the best, and I pull the express!"

He then puffed out of the station, as Lilith said, "You can toot at him all you want, but I'm not going to."

Steven was steaming happily along the line. He was sure that his friends would forget about his clanking and show him respect. He then saw Lilith puffing by. He listened for her 'toot-toot' but Lilith didn't toot at all. This made Steven cross!

He was so cross, that he didn't notice the red signal, and crashed into the back of Mack's produce wagons!! Mack was surprised.

"Are you alright Steven!!" he called out.

But Steven didn't reply. He was covered in smashed fruit and other things.

Mack took the express for Steven as he waited to be rescued. As he did, Jack came by, and said, "Hello Steven!! I see you're not the cleanest anymore!!"

Annie pulled up next.

"I don't think you'll be pulling the express anytime soon!" she joked.

Finally, Belle arrived, and said, "Steven's a mess! Steven's a mess! He's the largest, and jammiest!"

Soon, Steven was put back on the rails, and Stacy pushed him to the Workshop. The workmen worked hard, and Steven had to be looked over very well to make sure no produce had gotten into his funnel or boiler.

Soon, Annie, John and Lilith all took it in turns to take the express. Mack and Jonah helped the best they could, but were often called away to do other things.

Soon, Annie came back, feeling very puffed out.

"It's hard work pulling the express," she said, "I never remembered it being this heavy."

"Steven must be really strong and fast to pull that train everyday," said Lilith.

"I miss Steven," said Robert, "I had just gotten used to his clanking putting me to sleep."

Steven knew that the others were taking the express for him.

"Thank goodness," he said.

When Steven returned, the engines all had a heart to heart conversation.

"We're sorry that we made fun of you," said Belle.

"We now realize how hard the express has gotten for you Steven," said John.

"And I'm sorry for being so arrogant," said Steve, "I shouldn't have lost my temper like that."

So, the engines agreed to greet each other with a toot-toot, to pay respect, for all the hard work they do to on the American Controller's Railway.
