Chapter 19

Bella's POV

We watched in silence as Eleazar slowly walks toward us, his head hung in shame, whilst Carmen was being restrained by Kate and Tanya.

"Kick me once more, and I swear I'll shock you" Kate threatens, pulling Carmen further away from him.

"Let me see him" Carmen snarls, aiming another kick. Kate and Tanya both look over at Edward, who nods his head, not letting go of my hand. They let go of her, leaving her free to run up to Eleazar. Carmen stops less than a foot away from him.

Eleazar cautiously moves his head up to meet her gaze.

"Carmen--" he begins, in a shaky, small voice. Carmen cuts him off with a sharp slap in the face. The sound echos throughout the clearing, leaving everyone, including Eleazar, shocked.

"What was that for?" he asks, taking a small step backward. Carmen doesn't answer, instead, she slaps him again; harder, this time.

"Because of what you did!" she shrieks. "Esme nearly died because of you!"

He backs away with his hands up, looking at everyone of us gathered in the clearing. But nobody tried to calm Carmen down, or even stop her. Everyone was too angry with him to care. And after what he did, who would? Carmen is right; Esme nearly died today, all because of his actions.

"I did it to protect you" he counters, ducking to avoid a punch aimed at his head.

"As if!"

She kicks him in the shin so hard that he fell to the floor.

"I'm sorry, Carmen" he says, shuffling away from her. She kicks him again, and again, shrieking wordlessly. Kate goes up behind her, trying to reason with her, and failing. Carmen was in too much of a state to be calmed.

"I hate you!" she screams, kicking him again whilst repeating the words.

After about ten minutes of watching this, Kate, Tanya and Garrett started to intervene. It took all three of them to drag Carmen away from Eleazar; Kate had to shock her a few more times.

"Killing him won't reverse what he has done" Kate shouts, trying to get her voice heard over Carmen's primal screams. Carmen tries to bite Tanya, who lets go of her arm to step backward. Kate shocks Carmen with so many volts that she falls to the floor, her eyes rolling back into her head. This keeps happening until she managed to partially subdue Carmen's anger.

Garrett doesn't release his grasp on her until Alice says that she wouldn't do anything. Carmen gets to her feet, and begins to walk away.

"Where is she going?" I ask Edward, who was standing still in his place next to my side.

"Back home" Carmen replies, only now realising that Eleazar was following her. "Where are you going?" she snarls, not turning around.

"Back home, like you" he replies, looking over at Kate and the others, who were still staring at him in disbelief.

"Where? I'm sorry, I thought I heard you say that you were going back home. But, where is this home you speak of? Because I'm sure as vampires exist that only three other people live with me!"

"But, Carmen-"

"DID YOU NOT HEAR ME?!" she screams, turning to face him. Her eyes were blazing, unforgiving, as they watch Eleazar back away like a child scared of monsters. "I SAID: YOU DON'T. LIVE. WITH. ME!"

Eleazar looks over toward Tanya, who shakes her head.

"Eleazar, you don't have a home to go back to" she says, following Carmen into the forest.

I thought mates never fought like that. That they never got sick of one another. Or left the other.

But I was wrong.
