Chapter 39
Katsuki stood impatiently by the front door, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the wooden frame. He had changed into his yukata and was growing restless as he waited for Izuku, eager to get to the shrine for the New Year's ceremony. He could hear footsteps approaching, and the door slid open revealing Izuku, dressed in a stunning blue and white kimono.
Katsuki's breath caught in his throat at the sight of Izuku in the traditional garment. The intricate patterns and elegant folds of the fabric perfectly complemented Izuku's features, accentuating the curve of his waist and the graceful line of his neck. Katsuki couldn't help but stare, his eyes tracing every fold and detail as if he wanted to imprint the image into his memory. The sight of Izuku in the kimono was striking, and it left Katsuki momentarily speechless.
Katsuki couldn't help but blurt out, "Damn, you clean up nice." His usual filter completely bypassed.
You idiot.
"I mean I almost don't recognize you, Nerd."
Izuku responded with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Thanks, Kacchan," he murmured softly, his gaze distant. "I wanted to dress up for the occasion."
Katsuki noticed the change in Izuku's demeanor and grew concerned. He reached out and gently squeezed Izuku's hand. "Oi, you, okay?" he asked with a rare touch of genuine care.
Izuku nodded, his smile growing a touch more genuine. "Yeah, just... it's about my mom, you know? I can't help but feel a little somber."
Katsuki pulled Izuku into a gentle embrace. "I know, Deku," he whispered, planting a kiss on his forehead.
Shit, maybe this was a bad idea.
Izuku tried to change the subject and twirled a little to show off the kimono. "I didn't think you had such style Kacchan," he questioned with a jab of attempted playfulness.
Katsuki snorted, rolling his eyes going along with the ploy. "Of course, I have style, dumbass. I just don't show it off like you do." He grinned, bringing him back in for a hug.
"You look nice too, I like the green," Izuku complimented with a raised eyebrow, his eyes appreciatively trailing over Katsuki's dark green yukata. Katsuki pulled away, rubbing the back of his neck. "Let's just go already, I don't want wanna late," he said, trying to hide his sudden bashfulness.
Izuku chuckled softly, and Katsuki felt a tug of affection at the sound. He watched as Izuku took his arm, their fingers interlocking naturally as they headed out of the house. The shrine Katsuki picked was about a mile walk from the house. As they walked towards the shrine, they passed by other people dressed in yukatas, and the air was filled with the sound of bells and laughter.
Katsuki noticed that Izuku's smile was starting to brighten as he took in the view of the festival and people, albeit slowly. Izuku began to chat excitedly about the festival, pointing out different stalls and attractions they could check out later.
Katsuki listened with half an ear, more focused on how Izuku's eyes began to shine in the dim, warm light of the lanterns lining the streets. Although he was against going out in public with the crowds, especially after the last time, He couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over him, knowing that he was here with Izuku, enjoying this moment together. He was pulled out of thought as Izuku intertwined his fingers with his, Katsuki looked over at Izuku, and he was wearing that smile he loved so much.
