As soon as the last burning candle had faded, the two of them emerged from the shadows cast by the nearby trees on the outskirts of the town, concealing their every move with the dance of the wind as they stepped into the winding and gray cobbled-streets, which twisted in all directions. But, as was his habit, he came to a halt before moving on down any of the paths.

"Would you like to leave?" he asked.

Tise knew that the question sprang from the many comments she had made in the past, about his "hobby," but deep down, she knew full well it was not a hobby, but a necessity that kept him sane.

The offer was not tempting enough to be seriously considered. She was not repulsed or afraid of who he was. That phase of her life had passed, but she was aware that the question, the offer to choose between leaving or staying, was his way of communicating to her that it was he who wanted privacy, it was he who wanted to keep her away from that part of him.

"Yes, I want to grab some things." Tise extended her arms wide, gazing upon her dress. "Perhaps fabric. I think it's time for a new dress."

He nodded, relief flooding through him despite his attempts to conceal it. "Very well, just don't go too far, and don't do anything stupid."

She stretched her wings and swopped away from his shoulders.

"When have I done a stupid thing?" Tise asked him, and even though his expression remained stern and emotionless, a flicker of recognition revealed that he remembered a recent instance of her own foolishness.

"Look what happened on the river today has nothing to do with me being bad at making decisions," she explained before he could do it for her.

He did not place an ounce of faith in her words. With a nonchalant air, he turned and drawled, "Sure," as he rocked his hands back and forth, feigning disinterest in whatever arguments she was about to unleash. "Just be careful," he added, dissolving into the constricting embrace of the houses' darkness.

With a sly twinkle in her eye and a clever twist of her lips, Tise purposefully fooled herself into thinking that she had won the argument. "Always!" she answered, leaving him behind as he vanished in an instant.

Alone, Tise soared through the bustling streets, her eyes sweeping past the dreary "boxes" that mortals referred to as homes. It wasn't the first time she had seen all that, but she couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation each time she returned, hoping to discover something new. However, more often than not, her expectations were dashed as everything appeared dull and unremarkable, resembling nothing more than lifeless stones. This comparison was an understatement, considering that even the stones adrift in the Great Bircier River boasted vibrant hues, emitting a violet radiance during the chilly season.

Therefore, her motive for venturing into human territories was not merely to witness or encounter new experiences. Each time, Tise embarked on trips to mortal land solely for him, but she harbored an additional purpose for the day: to acquire fabric. And that was easy.

With her destination firmly fixed, Tise took flight along the street, whizzing past rows of houses until she halted directly in front of a solitary dwelling she knew very well. Without wasting a moment, she surveyed her surroundings, searching for a means of entry, but was met only with disappointment. Not a single window was open. Undeterred, she opted for the ancient art of slipping through the narrow crevice beneath the door.

Once inside, an enveloping darkness surrounded her, sticking to her skin, but, since it was not her first time there, she knew the way. Unfurling her wings cautiously, and resisting the temptation to assume absolute knowledge of every hidden corner, mindful of the possibility of colliding into an obstacle, she soared into the air. Peeping from above, she saw way more than she could from down below. But still, those were the times where she wished she had night vision. Sure, some had it, and she secretly envied them, but she always found a way to handle things in the end.
