It was supposed to be an easy job, in and out, which is one of the reasons he allowed you to come with him. Not that he could say no to you. Even if he did, you went ahead and did whatever you liked anyway, it was frustrating. The bounty was on a dead planet, no sign of foreseeable danger, so he left the ship, you at his side, striding out over the uneven surface. You stumbled along next to him, and the loud uttered curses made him wince every time, thinking you'd hurt yourself.
Then he heard a crack. Silence. Then a cascade of deafening noise, almost drowning out your yell. Almost. The fear in your tone struck a chord in his chest. He turned quickly, seeing the ground had collapsed from under your feet. Assuming what had happened, he lay flat on the dried earth, reaching a gloved hand down. He couldn't reach. Nor were you conscious to hold on even if he could.
"Dank Farrik!" He blurted out. He knew it was a bad idea to bring you. But a combination of your stubbornness and his inability to refuse you anything had gotten you hurt. Or worse. Fear gripped his heart in a vice, his eyes staring down at you, trying to see any movement of your chest, any sign you were alive.
He couldn't tell. Grief clawed at his throat. He'd have to get you out. Get you safe, the bounty be damned. But it was good money, and fuel was expensive. Gritting his teeth, he decided you would be fine for an hour or so until he could return with a rope to climb down and get you out.
~
The rope was heavy in his arms, but not quite as heavy as the guilt he held for leaving you behind. When he peered over the edge of the crevice, he couldn't see you at first. His heart fell. Are you dead? He secured the rope, dropping down, looking around.
"So now you decide I'm worth your time." Your voice. Relieved, he turned, ready to embrace you. Instead, he was met with a weak punch to the chest. You were supporting all your weight on one leg, the other held gingerly off the ground, your face ashy and pale. He noticed the flicker of pain in your eyes as you moved, and your words were slurred slightly. Cuts and scrapes were littered over your face and chest. Fuck.
"I went to get rope." This wasn't a lie, and he tried placating you, offering his arm for you to lean on, his helmet masking the expression that would have spoke of his untruths.
"Bullshit." You muttered, your words no less venomous by having the volume decreased. "That's a blaster burn. You left me alone."
"No, I-"
"Don't say anything, Mando. You'll only make it worse for yourself." Your face twisted into a scowl, shuffling along, using the wall for support. "I had to fight off a fucking Massif herd with a knife. Do you know how difficult that is?"
Only now was he starting to realise how bad his judgement was. But he wasn't going to let you slander him like that. "Yes, actually, because while you spend all day cosied up in the Razor Crest, I go out and catch bounties, which is how you were able to get that knife!" His tone rose with his anger. "And if you weren't so damned ignorant, maybe you would have realised the floor was unsteady and moved quietly."
"Maybe if you let me off the ship I'm so 'cosy' within, then I'd learn more!" You grunted. You still hadn't raised your voice. It made him wonder how injured you actually were, whether you were hiding the true amount of pain to shelter him. "Maybe if you weren't such an ass, I would have noticed. Instead, you walk off at the speed of light, leaving me to try keep up."
He was stunned into silence.
"Yeah." You snorted. "Finally realising that I don't spend my days running after you, because I couldn't keep up? Fuck, Mando, this was supposed to be an easy one, and you left me behind. Again." Your hands gripped the rope, but you couldn't pull yourself up. You weren't going to ask him for his help though.
You didn't have to. He made his way over to you, holding you against him with one arm, pulling the two of you up with the other, using his feet to grip the rope as he moved his hand. Annoyance burned behind your eyes. "Still playing the White Knight."
"Don't." He uttered the word, setting you on your feet. Foot. You still kept the majority of your weight on one leg, your eyes glaring at him through angry tears.
"You don't tell me to do shit anymore." You spat. "Maybe I would listen had you helped me earlier, but you still left me."
He rolled his eyes under the helmet. The hardening of your gaze told him that you knew. "I had a job to do. You would have got in the way." He realised his mistake as soon as the words left his mouth.
You straightened your spine, fury inhibiting your ability to speak for a moment. "What?" The word was a deadly hiss, barely moving your parted lips.
"I'm sorry, that's not what I meant-" He tried to backtrack.
"Don't fucking speak to me."
The ride on the Razor Crest was silent. You refused to acknowledge his presence, and he did nothing but try and gain your forgiveness with small acts. If you were struggling to reach something, he'd wordlessly pass it down to you. If you were hungry, but in too much pain to get up, he'd give you pain relief and make you food.
It did nothing to soften the ice in your gaze the few times you'd look at him. You brushed off his actions, usually only speaking when he asked how much pain you were in, or if it was okay for him to check over your injuries.
He thought you'd only get in the way. You weren't worthy of fighting by his side.
What an asshole.
