Humdrum conversations between a family that was barely holding it together by a single thread— pretending that anyone even cared about what happened at work today or how school was going. It was becoming increasingly awkward and uncomfortable, especially since Zeke still couldn't manage to utter more than five words to him. Truthfully, it had been almost a year since he'd seen his big brother, the last time being his father's previous birthday dinner which was just as painstakingly tormented as this one.

Maybe he couldconvince his dad to let him cut out early. He can mad-dash to Armin's and enjoy his evening with people he actually likes to be around. He can only imagine what the two of you were doing now; you were probably sitting pretty on Armin's bed, drowning in a cloud of angelic white as the two of you study atop of his pillowy duvet. The imagery forces a subtle smile on his lips, one that doesn't go unnoticed by the other men seated at the table.
