EXT. TATUM'S HOUSE - AFTERNOON - LATER
The late afternoon sun is quickly disappearing. Tatum and Sidney rock on the front porch looking out into the small town neighborhood. Dewey's patrol jeep is parked in the driveway.
Despite loud music, blaring from an inside stereo, this is a quiet moment.
"Maybe Cotton Weary is telling the truth. Maybe he was having an affair with your mom." Tatum says looking at Sidney with a sad expression on her face
"What- how could you think that" Sidney says looking at her best friend with a heartbroken look in her face.
"I mean it's proven" Stu said backing up his girlfriends opinion
"Wow" Sidney says glaring at her supposedly best friend
"So you think my mom was a slut too?" Sidney ask looking at Tatum with a frown
"I didn't say that, Sid. But you know there were rumors. Your dad was always out of town on business. Maybe your mom was a very unhappy woman." Tatum explains
"If they were having an affair how come that Cotton couldn't prove it in court?" Sidney ask jumping off the post
"You can't prove a rumor. That's why it's a rumor." Tatum says trying to get her pint across
"What if she's right and Cotten really wants t the person we think he is" Katherine says slowly looking a the ground
"What, huh agree with her" Sidney says looking heartbroken
"No, I'm just saying what if it wasn't Cotten that killed her, what If it was another person who pretended to be him" Katherine says looking at everyone who is thinking it over
"Hey Kit Kat, let's not think about it right now" billy says, gently holding her chin before bringing her into a kiss.
"Created by that little tabloid twit Gale Weathers." Sidney says gales name like it was venom in her mouth
"Hey" Gale yells as we all look at her
"Your still here? I though you left" Stu says laughing as billy punches his arm
"It goes further back, Sid. There's been talk about other men." Tatum says softly to her best friend
"And you believe it?" Sidney ask , hurt etched all over her face
"Well...you can only hear that Richard Gere-gerbil story so many times before you have to start believing it." Tatum says as a long silence rises as Sidney agonizes over all of this. She stands up and moves to the edge of the porch and stares out onto the neighborhood.
"Who's that" Harry mumbles
"If I was wrong Cotton, then he's still out there." Sidney says
"Don't go there, Sid. You're starting to sound like some Wes Carpenter flick Don't freak yourself out--we've got a long night ahead of us." Tatum says no owing beside Sidney
