It was Saturday and Jay had just returned from AOMG. He noticed that Jin was dressed more formally, than normal. "I think this is the first time I've ever seen you in a dress."
"I look like a dork," Jin sighed. "Maybe I should change and just wear jeans."
"Not at all, you look really nice. Now you're taller than me, with those heals on."
"I hope I don't twist my ankle. They are short heals, but it's been a very long time since I've worn dress shoes and not just nice kicks."
Jay went upstairs to change out of his casual cloths and into dress pants and a long sleeve shirt. When he came down, Jin noticed he wasn't wearing as much bling as usual. For some reason that put her at ease. She didn't want to come across to the family as being too well off.
"Ready to go?"
"I'm set to get this over with. These relatives are from my mom's side, so this could get ugly." They went outside after locking up and setting the alarm. "Who's car is that?"
"Mine's in the shop. This Honda is just a loaner until it's fixed," Jay explained.
"Nice. I see models like this one all over town. It's popular." Once inside the car, with her seat belt on, Jin told him where they were going. "It's Jyoti Restaurant, where we are meeting those people."
"I know where it is. Who's supposed to be coming?"
"My aunt, her husband and my grandmother. I'm glad that in language school, they taught us about using honorifics."
They arrived before her family and were seated at the reserved table. Jay noticed she was gripping her knees and took the closest hand into his. Her grip lessened and she took a few deep breaths. Stone had sent Jin a picture of their aunt, so she could recognize her. Both Jin and Jay stood up as the family arrived. Both bowed in respect and then sat down, when her family did. Her grandmother was in a wheel chair and Jay quickly got up to move a chair, so that there was more room. The grandmother thanked him and smiled warmly. Jin's aunt wore a sour expression and the husband looked annoyed.
Jin's nervousness affected her Korean and in the end Jay did most of the speaking. The grandmother patted his hand on the table, but Jin's aunt was borderline rude. Jin had asked Stone if their Korean relatives spoke english and he confirmed their aunt was fluent.
Gathering her courage, Jin said to her aunt, "Stone was misinformed. I have a place to live and I am working."
"Illegally I'm sure," her aunt's husband said in Korean.
"Actually I have an E-6 Visa, it allows me to work here legally."
"Your mother told us about you and we don't want your kind living with us. Stone failed to mention that you're street trash!"
Her aunt spoke in perfect english.
Both Jin and Jay were shocked. He'd heard enough and stood up, telling Jin in english to wait for him at the car. Then in Korean he politely told them off. Jay told them what kind of a person Mrs. Bong was and about Mr. Bong. He also explained what a great person Jin truly was and how ignorant they were. He apologized to the grandmother, who seemed to be the only one who hadn't been nasty to Jin. He threw some money on the table to pay for their uneaten food and then left. He was angry and worried about Jin.
