Author pov......

Shaurya was reading a novel when his phone rang, displaying an unknown number.

It was 10 at night. He glanced at the screen, frowning slightly. Who could be calling this late?

The phone stopped ringing, only to buzz again a moment later. Finally, he answered.

“Hello! Who is this?” he asked in his formal, no-nonsense tone.

“Hiiii Mr. Captain!!!” came a chirpy voice from the other side, deliberately modulated with playful mischief.

Shaurya's brows furrowed. “May I know who this is, Miss?”

“You forgot me this early, Captain? Don’t you remember the time we spent together?” Niyati replied, faking a hurt tone.

“I think you’re mistaking me for someone else, Miss. I don’t know you,” Shaurya said, puzzled, though a flicker of amusement crossed his face.

Niyati bit her tongue, trying not to laugh, while Shaurya, now catching on, decided to play along.

“Of course not, Mr. Hottie Captain. I’m talking about you only…” she added in an exaggerated flirty tone.

“Ohhh, I see. Just remembered… Tanya, right? How could I forget you?” he said with a sly smirk.

“Who the hell is this Tanya?” Niyati snapped, instantly offended, making Shaurya chuckle softly.

“Don’t laugh! And tell me who this ridiculous Tanya is. Were you really close to her?” she asked, her tone laced with jealousy that only made his smile grow wider.

Closing the book, Shaurya laid back on his bed, the smile still playing on his lips.

“Shauryaaaa... I’m telling you, just spill the truth, otherwise…” she warned him, but he was clearly enjoying her possessiveness.

“Otherwise what, Niyatiiiii?” he teased, stretching her name playfully, knowing exactly how to push her buttons.

“Otherwise I will kiss you in front of everyone… right in the middle of the road,” she said, dead serious.

Shaurya choked, coughing hard at her audacious threat. He sat up and reached for a glass of water, trying to compose himself while she laughed freely, imagining his red face.

Does she even think once before saying something? he thought, shaking his head at her unabashed boldness.

“Captain sahab!! Where are you? Are you lost imagining the kiss?” she asked, unable to resist.

“I’m here only,” he said, trying to sound unaffected, though his heart was still racing.

“Why did you call so late?” he asked, hoping to steer the conversation back to safe ground.

“It’s just 10 PM, not that late,” she replied with a shrug he could almost hear.

“Why did you call?” he repeated, his voice a little softer now.

“Because I wanted to talk to you,” she said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

“Talk about what?” he continued his interrogation, half amused, half intrigued.

“Shaurya... talk to me nicely now. I’m the one doing everything that you should have done, and still you’re showing me attitude,” she said with mock frustration.

“Niyatiiiiiii... why are you doing this?” he asked quietly, the smile fading just a bit.

“Don’t pretend like you don’t know why I’m doing this,” she said, her voice dropping with seriousness, making him pause.

“I know… and that’s why I’m asking,” he admitted after a moment. “The path you’re choosing is not easy, Niyati. It’s full of hardships and unknowns.”

“Every journey becomes easy when you have the right partner by your side,” she said gently.

Shaurya fell silent, her words echoing in his heart.

“But what if that togetherness isn’t guaranteed? What if the partner you want to share your journey with lives a life full of uncertainty? Then what?” he asked, now standing in the balcony, looking up at the moonlit sky.

“Physical distance doesn’t matter when hearts are aligned. The love you carry is enough. And about uncertainty... life itself is uncertain, Shaurya. Nothing is fixed or permanent here. But that doesn’t stop us from chasing our dreams or loving who we love,” she said with a quiet strength that amazed him.

The girl who often seemed like a bundle of mischief was now speaking truths that cut deep, her innocence wrapped in startling wisdom.

“Niyati… you’re not understanding…” he tried again, but she interrupted.

“Please, Shaurya. Don’t ignore what we have between us. Don’t push me away,” she pleaded softly.

Her voice cracked slightly, and he inhaled sharply, his heart clenching.

“You deserve a normal, happy life, Niyati. What you’re stepping into isn’t easy. I don’t want you to live under the constant fear of losing me,” he said, his voice almost a whisper, haunted by the realities of his world.

“You don’t get to tell me what I deserve. Why can’t you just let me in? When I’m ready for it all, why are you shutting the door?” she asked, hurt lacing every word.

“My own father was an Army officer, Shaurya. I’ve already lived this life once. I’ve seen everything. And despite that, I’m willing to choose this again—for you. So why are you pushing me away?” she demanded.

Her voice trembled with emotion, and before he could respond, the call disconnected.

He stared at the phone, rubbing his face in frustration. She was too pure, too full of life to be dragged into his uncertain world. And yet… she wanted it, him, completely.

He stepped back into the room and sat down heavily on the bed.

He wanted her, more than he had words to express. But he couldn’t be selfish. He couldn't gamble with her heart, not when he knew the stakes of his profession.

She’ll understand… if not today, then maybe tomorrow. One day, she’ll forget me… and move on to a safer love, he told himself.

But even as he thought that, a hollow ache settled deep in his chest—and he wasn't sure if he'd ever be able to forget her.
