KEELEY WATCHED JAMIE CURIOUSLY as his eyes flickered to his phone. He'd come over to apologize for his poorly kept email password and all that followed his mistake, so it was only natural she invited him in for tea. But his mind seemed elsewhere. He was distracted, and despite his usually short attention span, something about this felt different.
"I don't think I've ever seen you wait around for a text," she said at last, stirring a hefty serving of milk into her tea. She took a sip before putting the milk away and taking a seat at her counter.
"I'm not waiting for a text," he answered, scoffing as he absentmindedly pushed his own spoon around in his tea. Childishly, she thought she heard him mumble under his breath something along the lines of, "I don't wait for texts. People wait for my texts."
"Right, but you're waiting for something, then, aren't you?"
A buzz interrupted them, sounding a notification before he could answer, and Jamie all but leapt to open his phone. His face fell when he saw it was only a reminder from Roy about training.
"So Kate didn't answer, huh?"
"No, she . . ." He paused. "How do you know it's Kate? What if it were Isaac or one of the boys?"
"So you were waiting for a text."
"I didn't say I was, but if I were, it might not be Kate."
She paused. "Was it Isaac or one of the boys?"
He sighed. "No."
"That's what I thought." Keeley confiscated Jamie's spoon, seeing his tea was starting to splash over the sides of the mug from how intensely he'd begun to stir it. "Now, are you ever going to tell her you like her?"
"I don't—we're not—" He tripped over his words at her assumption, leaning against the kitchen counter, but she certainly did not need a verbal confirmation to know she was right. After taking a deep breath, he continued. "We're just . . . friends."
"Do you want to be just friends? Because with the way you two are acting," she let out a low whistle. "That is not what friendship looks like. I mean I don't see you acting that way with Ted or Sam. Shit, you didn't even act that way with me when we were dating."
When he didn't say anything, she continued with a soft sigh. "You are in love with that girl, and it's about time you own up to it."
