Chapter 13
Nuri

Sighing, I leaned back against the door of my house while thinking about what I heard. Mizail’s father reminded me so much of my own that I had to leave. I would never fit in here and I’d never be able to please anybody.

“Feels just like home,” I mumbled while locking my door before heading over to my bathroom. After a long soak in my makeshift bath, I decided that I’d rather spend the rest of my day alone while working on making myself some new clothes. I’d make plenty for the girls and myself so we could all be comfortable. I’m sure the girls would be alive. I’m sure they’d be well and then we’d hang out and I wouldn’t feel so lonely. I smiled at that thought while picking out fabrics I thought would be good for each. Even though I didn’t know their measurements either, I thought back on some things. I’ve hugged Lily a few times when we were in the prison so I could guess some of her measurements but Yareli and Wren would be another case.

I quickly busied myself with making outfits for Lily based around my own memories while also making my own performing apparel. “A cute bra-like crop top with some flare in my pants would be fantastic to dance in. Yes, this material feels best and breathy.” I mumbled while shuffling through my fabrics. Once I found what I wanted, it was easy to use the tools that the tailor and Ahmaer had brought me.

By the time I had finished up with my first set of performance clothes, a knock resonated through my small home. Quickly grabbing my crutch, I stood from my seat while stretching my back before heading to the door. As I opened it, I was surprised to see Yusa by herself. Looking past her, I was even more shocked to see how much brighter the cave had gotten from the lights hanging all around. It must’ve been night time.

“Nuri,” Yusa called as I turned my attention back to her before smiling and letting her in. “I’m sorry that my mate made you feel unwelcomed in our home.” She apologized as I shook my head.

“He’s right, I’ll never fit in here. That’s why I left your home. I was breaking up a happy family. I’m sorry that I caused so much fuss.” I apologized while offering her a seat as she shook her head before offering the chair to me. I quietly took a seat as Yusa frowned down at me.

“No,” Yusa softly growled though it didn’t seem like it was towards me. “You’ve done no wrong. You have no need to apologize for his blatant ignorance. Don’t ever bow down to people who are in the wrong, Nuri. That’s how they take advantage of you.” She huffed while crossing her arms over her chest as I finally noticed the bag in her hand. “I did not come here to make you feel as if you should apologize. Again, you’ve done nothing wrong. I have come to invite you to dinner.” She sighed as I softly shook my head.

“I don’t think it would be best for me to step foot back into your house. I almost broke your family up.” She frowned at me again.

“Nuri, suna. My family has been broken up since my fledgling became a pre-teen. I believe that is the word humans use.” She mumbled before shaking her head. “That’s not the point. Those two have been going at it since Mizail decided to be his own person. Vutur is stubborn to change and I wouldn’t blame you for hating him but he deserves it. He has no right to compare you to the humans that arrived here before you. He doesn’t understand that not all humans are the same just like how not all Aloreans are the same!” Yusa was fuming by the time she finished her sentence as visible smoke slowly puffed from her nostrils.

“They’ve always been fighting? What about the other humans?” I inquired as Yusa sighed.

“It’s been some time now but before you, other humans arrived here when the sandy desert was once a forest of trees though it felt like a jungle. These humans came down in an old ship that unloaded a great bit of them armed with weapons. At the time, all of the tribes were fighting against each other but when the humans came and started killing off our people, they all joined together to kill off the intruders. It was before our time, but some of the elders remember and they retell the stories to all generations of the tribe. That’s why people are afraid of humans. But, you aren’t a threat to us. You were injured and looking for a place to survive. You at least deserve that from surviving the sandstorms.” She softly smiled as something wet plopped down on my hand while I looked down. Resting on the back of my hand was a teardrop that was soon followed by several as I started crying. It wasn’t long before Yusa’s coolness wrapped around me. “I’m sorry for making you cry, suna.” She apologized while stroking my head like my mom used to do.
