I sipped on my dark coffee, regretting once again the decision to pull an all-nighter solely for my incapacity to put down the research paper I was working on.

My sleeping schedule was so messed up by that point that maybe it wouldn't matter.

I looked around for clues of what time it could be, so tired that I had forgotten about the small clock at the top right corner of the screen I had been staring at for the past several hours.

When the realization hit me I sighed and rubbed my eyes, my first three fingers pushing hard enough into my skull to allow me to see colorful shapes dancing behind my eyelids.

I closed my laptop and didn't bother even walking far enough to reach my bedroom, the much closer couch being a good enough arrangement for whatever time I was going to be able to rest before starting my day.

The ringing of my phone woke me up, utterly confused and disappointed with the noise I sat up and reached for the device I had forgotten to plug in to charge the previous night.

What a mess.

Seeing my image on the device told me it was a video call that I was about to answer to and I quickly passed a hand over my face as if I could magically look awake and put together after waking up in my predicament.

"Hey, Angie! Look, this is my first day of school outfit!" The six-year-old yelled at the screen before showing me excitedly her colorful polo shirt and her plaid skirt.

"Wow Rory, you're so big," I took a screenshot of her image, in the hope to be able to retrieve it later and pay better attention to it once fully awake.

She had Mom Amelia's big brown eyes and deep dimples on her cheeks any time she smiled.

"Can I see Keynes now?" She asked bouncing up and down in front of the camera.

I nodded while scanning around the room to see if I could spot my favorite roommate, the furry one with big green eyes.

"I don't know where he went sweetie," I said in the hope she wouldn't have me get up.

Sitting up was one thing, but standing to search for the long-haired dark gray cat was a completely different game in which I wasn't sure I was capable of partaking right then.

"Can't you shake his food?" She asked knowingly, having seen me do that before to call his attention for her.

It was my baby sister's first day of first grade, and if she wanted to say hi to my cat before going off to start her educational career I figured I could've arranged that much for her.

"Only 'cause it's you, smalls."

I grunted getting up from the couch and reached into the cupboard for his box of kibble, it was sufficient for me to pick it up and the noise of it being lifted from the shelf was somehow enough to summon the cat, who appeared sitting politely on my kitchen counter, giving me the most feeble meow, in his request for me to deliver his food quickly.

"Was that him? Did he come?" Aurora asked, her face as close to the phone as it could possibly be.

"Yes," I told her, before flipping the camera to show her the animal, "Keynes, can you say hi to Rory?"

"Hello, Keynes!" She shouted, startling me.

Keynes wasn't too impressed with the noise either, but unfortunately for him, he had to earn his kibble.
