To my surprise, Jane was extremely professional and completely unbothered for the rest of the flight, she didn't appear to be uncomfortable. Her first shock from finding us together earlier was completely gone.
Sadie so easily got back into the celebrity character with that big chunk of humbleness that made her into the most lovable person one could imagine.
I felt my entire body tense when we landed, the nerves of having to face my family were getting the best of me.
"They're all at the hotel," Sadie read my mind, "You get the whole car ride to pull it together," She joked.
I nodded to her and used in fact the entire car ride to try to come up with things to say and ways to answer the unavoidable questions and jokes that would be thrown at us.
It had always been like that.
Sadie had always been the more confident one around our family—even when it was still just my family. It was unclear to me why that was.
I had nothing to fear and nothing to hide, and yet I felt like a child who had been caught with their hands in the candy jar.
Sadie looked at her phone briefly as we got out of the car and stepped in front of the small hotel.
It was a very beautiful structure, it complemented the tropical island with a Spanish-style facade, with lots of arches, cream walls, light brown bricks, and marble columns.
Sadie looked around elated, she clearly couldn't wait to be with everyone.
My heart ached at the thought that I had prevented her from being able to hang out with everyone on many occasions. I knew that she had purposefully avoided all meetups in which I had to be present.
But there would be no more of that.
"They are all at dinner, are you ready?" She grabbed my hand and pulled me closer to her, enough to be able to plant a quick kiss on my cheek.
I nodded, but we both knew I was lying. She looked amused, which I was glad for, amusement was much better than disappointment.
"Why are you getting all of the texts and I'm not?" I mumbled as we followed the hotel signs in search of the dining hall.
"Your mom Laura would ask the same exact question," She shook her head and pulled me gently past a corner.
True.
My lips thinned in a tight line as the glass wall to the dining tables became visible.
Only our family—alongside Amy's—was sitting at a massive table in the middle of the room, the rest of the place was completely empty.
Nobody could see us yet.
A cold shiver went down my spine and I nodded at Sadie. She tried to let go of my hand, but I squeezed it instead and secured my hold on hers.
I was all in. I was with her.
Sadie's smile was bright back at me. She surprised me by pulling me back to the side—back to where we couldn't see our family—and she kissed me. She kissed me with passion and love. And I once again started to question whether I deserved to be kissed like that.
"I knew it was you!" The squeaky voice made us both jump away from each other.
It took Sadie no time to recollect herself and bend down with open arms and the most excited smile.
I watched my little sister run to crash into her arms.
Sadie picked her up and held her tight. Rory laughed giddily while kicking her feet.
