I still have to go to the wedding. I'm the ring barer. I have to bring the round pieces of metal with diamonds attached that represents the coming together of two people in holy matrimony to my mother and the devil that walks among us. Adam.
I've already endured agonizing amounts of wedding planning, but I guess any planning for this wedding is dreadful enough. Adam has been over everyday for the past two weeks with wedding planners. Mom makes me sit in the living room and help her make decisions, although I never make a single sound the whole time.
"What do you think of this pattern, sweetie?" Mom asked, sympathetically. I shrug in response. "Please honey? I do value your opinion!"
"It's your wedding. You choose." I tell her, no emotion in my voice able to be detected at all. Since being banned from any contact with the world outside my house, I've adapted to a way of speaking that can only be described as monotone robot, and even that is an understatement on how monotone and depressing I've become.
"Your mother asked you a question!" Adam snaps.
"Fine, the red." I say, glaring over at the monster sitting on my couch. The wedding planner, obviously extremely uncomfortable, held up the red table cloth as display.
"No! What's wrong with you? Actually look up and make a real decision!"
"What do you think I did?!" I raise my head up, shooting daggers at him with my stare of death.
"You just chose the first color you saw!"
"I like the red."
"The red will clash with your mother! If she goes with that whole 'something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue', which I assume she will seeing as I am a man of tradition, the red will clash with the blue item!"
"If you are truly a man of tradition, wouldn't you marry a woman and start your own family instead of stepping in on mine?"
"Jared!" Mom gasped.
"That's it," Adam stood up, filled up with so much rage, it seemed like any minute now he would explode, "go to your room!"
Still sitting on the couch, I folded my arms over my chest and crossed my arms. "What gives you the right to force me?"
"What gives you the right to back talk me?"
"Jared honey, just go to your room." Mom sighed, disappointed. I stood up, sneered at the vile man in front of me, and marched up to my room. I could continue to hear mom trying and failing to calm Adam down after I slammed my door shut.
It was about an hour later mom finally came knocking on my door. "Can I come in?" she asked softly.
"Depends. Is he with you?" I replied, coldly.
"No, he went home."
"Alright." I softened up. I sat up from previously laying on my stomach on my bed as she came through the door. Her make up covered face full of concern. "What's up?"
"I'm sorry about earlier, but Adam and I are under a lot of stress planning for this wedding and it didn't exactly make it easier that you back talked him."
"Mom, you have to admit that he started it."
"I know, but you still didn't need to do that. I know you don't like him very much, but I love him. I know eventually, though, he'll grow on you too. It may take some time, but you need to give him a chance."
"Why should I give him a chance? I don't like how he treats me. I don't like how he treats you either, mom. You deserve better."
"Honey, he loves me. And I love him too."
"Mom, I know you don't like me talking about it, but dad loves you more than he does." Mom gave a long, disappointed sigh. "But that comparison shouldn't even be made, because dad loves you, a lot. He only wants me and you to be happy and well."
"Sweetie, if that were true he'd leave us be. He would do as I asked and never come back for us."
"Don't you get it? He comes for us so he can at least try!"
"It's just not true. He's a cold blooded killer!"
"How many people has he killed recently? No one! He's changed!"
"People don't change honey!"
"You don't even know him anymore, mom. I just, I want us to have a family again. A nice, loving family!"
"We will honey, soon." She hugged me close. "Trust me. You, Adam, and I. We can be one big, happy, loving family. All together.
"I wish I could believe you mom. I really do."
