His eyes - the color of intoxicating champagne - surprised me with nothing more than a wink and a smile.

Paulie was in control. He definitely knew what he was doing.

- Who do you think you are to wear an outfit like that? - he asked, pretending to be angry - fuck, I don't even know what to say. Do you think I can pay attention to anything else?

The surroundings of Galley-la were absolutely empty. It was almost as if you could touch the silence.

The only thing I could hear clearly was my own breathing.

- It's three in the morning. It's dangerous for a woman to walk around like that, alone, in a little dress. - he stopped to look at my legs again - even more so a woman like you.

- Well, I'm not alone anymore, am I? You're here now.

- I want to know what that son of a bitch did to you. - he said, his long fingers gripping the cigar tightly.

I rolled my eyes.

- To tell you the truth, he didn't do anything. I did. - I smiled with satisfaction - I dumped his ass. He was quite an asshole, after all.

- You dumped his ass, so what? You left alone to be at the mercy of any asshole out there?

- I told you I'm not alone. You're here, fuck...

- I'm not having this conversation with you again - he puffed on his cigar - you can wear my jacket if you want.

- It's not cold.

- Fuck it. You'll wear it.

- Why are you being such a pain in the ass?

- Because I fucking care about you. It's three in the morning and you're walking around alone. The world is cruel, Y/n.

He was right. I knew he was right.

- You're a pain in the ass, Paulie.

I stepped closer until I took the jacket from his hands. I tied it around my waist.

- There you go. I'm going home. Tomorrow I'll give you your damn jacket back - I grumbled - good night.

But he grabbed my wrist.

- I'll go with you.

I quickly disentangled myself from him.

- 'No, you're not. I don't want my gossipy neighbors gossiping.

- They have nothing to gossip about. It's three in the morning. Everyone will be asleep.

I stopped to think.

- What if we stayed here? - I asked - we can watch the sunrise together.

- Where did you get that idea?

- Oh, I don't know. It's nice here, with you.

- You're just saying that because you're needy, because you broke up with that asshole.

- That may be so. But I doubt you'll say no. I know you.

He seemed to agree.

- Okay. But... don't stand so close. - he asked, his cheeks flushing.

We both sat on the floor of the Galley-la, me with my legs stretched out uncomfortably because of the dress, and him rather casually, crossing them in an uncluttered manner.

There was silence for a few seconds, but it wasn't uncomfortable. My mind seemed at ease. At peace. And it seemed to anticipate what was about to happen next.
