After a few days of training, a peculiar camaraderie had developed between Axel and me. During one exercise, he orchestrated a surprise intrusion, a tactic meant to test our alertness. Startled, I instinctively swung, my fist connecting with his face, leaving a mark—an unintended black eye. It was both an inadvertent response and a testament to the realism of our training, an unspoken acknowledgment of our shared dedication.

"I still hold a grudge," Axel muttered, an ice pack pressed against his bruised right eye. Despite the apology, his tone held a tinge of playful reproach. Meanwhile, I struggled to contain my laughter, caught between amusement and sympathy. I couldn't deny the satisfaction of landing a hit, given the unexpected stunt he had pulled.

"Oh, come on," I retorted, crossing my arms and reclining in the chair, propping my feet onto the desk. A mischievous smirk danced across my lips as I continued, "I did say sorry after I punched you."

His response was a scoff, his annoyance tinged with a trace of reluctant amusement. "You've got to be kidding me," Axel exclaimed, a scowl marring his features as he turned toward me, his eyebrows deeply furrowed. I couldn't help but roll my eyes in response, a hint of a smirk playing on my lips.

"It was instinct, okay? A reflex," I protested, my tone carrying a mixture of justification and amusement. My point had been made—the 'intruder' stunt had earned him a black eye, courtesy of my quick response.

"Your 'reflex' ended up in you PUNCHING MY FACE," Axel retorted, his annoyance evident as he groaned and leaned back in his chair, his gaze shifting to the screen before him.

With a touch of defiance, I countered, "Well, what would you have preferred? A swift kick to the balls?"

Axel's reaction was immediate, a mix of disbelief and protest. "You wouldn't dare!"

A mischievous giggle escaped my lips as I locked eyes with Axel. "Do you want me to? I mean, all you've got to do is ask," I teased, a playful grin tugging at the corners of my mouth.

"I genuinely despise you," Axel retorted, his tone carrying a blend of exasperation and mock annoyance.

"Yet here you are, putting up with my antics," I responded with a light laugh, my fingers playfully ruffling his hair.

"Hey, I spent a considerable amount of time on that," Axel complained, adjusting his hair with a mock frown.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes, my laughter lingering in the air. "Alright, fine, hair artist. My apologies."

With a huff and a playful glare, Axel turned his attention back to his tasks, his expression a blend of camaraderie and lighthearted irritation.

Our night drew to a close, marked by Axel playfully delivering a swift kick to my rear as we prepared to depart. "Consider that payback!" Axel declared with a huff, a mischievous glint in his eye. I couldn't help but wince, rubbing my mildly sore behind.

"Yeah, but at least I didn't resort to kicking," I retorted with a mock groan, my tone laced with playful irritation. As we headed towards our respective vehicles, I shot him a mock glare, one that held a mixture of camaraderie and feigned annoyance.

Axel's response was a nonchalant snicker, his words carrying a hint of amusement. "Well, I'm sorry, not sorry."

With a roll of my eyes and a chuckle, I acknowledged the unspoken truce between us. Our exchanges, whether pranks or punches, were the cornerstone of our evolving partnership, a bond that was forged amidst the challenges of our new role.
