Chapter 1: [I can't hear but can see]

You know what useless feeling is ?

No , not that you all are thinking for me I felt really useless that day when I was playing with a doll while my dadi died from a heart attack she was yelling at the top of her lungs to grab my attention but her pleading voice that was unheard by me no..no... That's not it because I am deaf was it really my fault that I can't hear

I am Inayat Verma I am currently a student at Mumbai University soon I'll
Being able to fulfill my dream of becoming an otolaryngologist

Shoulder tap*

I turned around to face the person behind me

" Inayat beta are not going to University today? " asked mama ji lipsing to me

" Am I going to college..... Yes Mama ji today I have an important lecture i can't miss it " i signed reading his lips movement

" wow beta you are finally getting my lips movements right now come lets go " said mama ji taking my bag from my hand

My mama ji means Ravi Verma who adopted me when everyone abandoned me he is like a father to me who always supported me and educated me he is a Judge at the Supreme court he is not a common or normal man he is a wealthy person and most importantly a kind hearted person but I never wanted any single financial help from him even though he stubbornly told me to accept it as his love from him with all that emotional drama of his I accepted with a promise to pay him back in future which he agreed

" What do you want to eat for breakfast ?" He asked tapping my shoulder again

Oh if you all are thinking about tapping on the shoulder it's his habit to grab my attention

" Mama- before I can complete the sentence she walked out from kitchen

She is my Mami Radhika Verma my mama ji's wife no she is not that kind hearted if you think she doesn't like me from the first day I came thank God I am deaf if not I would have died from her nagging and her foul mouth she keeps yelling at Mama ji I think it's because of me but mama ji loves her I don't want to disrespect her they are a beautiful couple with one son Siddharth Verma
Siddharth is two years older than me he is like Mama ji kind hearted he always treated me like his own small sister but he is always not here He lives in the USA for business I really miss him

" Oh hamari Rajkumari ki seva ki ja Rahi hai " she said making her way towards dining table

" Radhu can you please leave that girl for a day why do you have to keep nagging it's unfair to talk bad about a person who can't hear you " said Mama ji

No mama ji even though I can't hear anyone I can see what they are talking but I am ignorant about everything

" Ravi why do you always take her side ?" Said mami glaring at Mama ji

" Radhu can we not talk about that now Inayat has an important lecture to attend please serve her breakfast to eat we will talk later " said Mama ji taking seat at his usual chair

This lips reading thing is brusting my mind and today is my first day at normal class I have always attended special classes for sign language which was easy to understand but this lips reading is so exausting

I started eating silently I was not that talkative just imagine being in my shoes there are tons and millions of people talking around you but you still feel lonely cause you can only hear silence and believe me when I say I am lonely i don't have friends not even one i only talk to Siddharth and Mama ji I have always minded my business even though everyone in my class always chased after me just because for my pretty face sake but always pity me for my deafness after knowing the truth

" Inayat let's go it's already 7am " said Mama ji getting up from the chair

I nodded my head following him towards his KIA car he was not that tasteful about cars so he didn't care about cars as long as it's was useful

He opened the door for me with a sweet fatherly smile

" how gentlemanly of you " i said grining at him

"Just for my beta " he said patting my head

After a 20 minutes driving we arrive at my University

" Here you go princess have a nice day
Text me after your lectures I will pick you up" he said giving me thumps up

" Ok Mama ji have a nice day " i said waving him

After my bio and theory class I was heading to canteen to grab some lunch

When someone tap on my arm
She was a girl with dark eyes and brown skin similar to my age wearing white coat

I raised my eyes brows in questioning look

" Um... I know you , you are Inayat Verma right ?" She said something

" Sorry but can you be clear I am deaf i can't read your lips if you murmure" i said with straight face

" Oh I am sorry for that" she did in sign language

She knows sign language I am surprised she seems like chemistry student seeing her coat how can she use sign language

" hello my name is Naina Sinha final year chemistry student i just wanted to ask you some questions for my practical project can I ? " She said making signs with her hands

" Yes , i can but you don't have to use sign language i can read lips just talk clearly " i said asking to sit in front of me

She nodded

She was talkative but sweet girl she asked me some questions related to ears part for her assignment which i didn't mind to answer

" well Inayat it was nice meeting you" she said pulling me in a hug
I was surprised at first but I hugged her back

After saying bye to her i noticed it's is the time to head back home

I was waiting 10 minutes for mama ji he must have caught in work i should text him

Chat*

Inayat: Mama ji where are you? I am in front of University gate

Mama ji : Sorry Inayat😔 I will be there
In five minutes just stay there don't go anywhere

Inayat: ok👍

I ended chat when a lady with a heavy shopping bags not paying attention towards the signal crossing the road

" Wait Ma'am !" I yell running towards her then pulling her arms to stop her from moving ahead

She was terrified and shocked

" Ma'am are you alright?! " I asked looking at her concern

She nodded still recovering from shocked

I offered her some water to drink

" Thank you beta " she said similing at me

" Don't worry Ma'am you are alright now, do you want me to drive you at your home? " i asked holding her hand

At which she shook her head and said something which i didn't understand well because she was just mumbling

But she was saying no so I didn't forced her

" Ma'am are you sure right?" I asked again for reassurance

At which she nodded again

So I smiled at her saying goodbye then I was just someone tap on my shoulder of course it was Mama ji

" Inayat beta chalo" he said taking my hand

He was looking upset about what was wrong
