March 1943 - London
As the next couple of weeks went by, Ella had learned more about the energy that coursed through her veins. She left out the specifically intimate details of how she came to realise the link between the power and the emotions, but Howard had seemed proud of himself when his first theory was proven correct. He'd been working a lot with Ella in the labs, getting her more used to controlling the power she had. She tried not to think of it as a curse anymore. It was something she was always going to have to live with, so she couldn't be afraid of it, or it would drive her mad.
The journey to London was worrying, but Ella could only be grateful for it. She'd been afraid when she heard that the unit was moving. Worried that Colonel Philips was going to send her back to Brooklyn. She was a woman living with a unit of soldiers. She didn't belong there, nor did she imagine the people higher up wanted her to stay. She was shocked to say the least when Peggy told her to pack any clothes she had before the move, but relief had flooded through her at the same time.
Her powers, whilst under control a lot more now, were still dangerous. She still carried some form of fear for herself, for what she could do, and for what she was still yet to discover about what she was. The thought of being sent home whilst still trying to navigate her way through the pain of her imprisonment was terrifying. And just thinking about having to abandon Bucky after getting him back was a nightmare all on its own. One that they both shared.
Ella staying with the unit left him afraid of her wellbeing, but not anywhere near as nervous he would have been if she were sent away. All the trips he'd taken around the world since joining the army had been tough, filled with dread and an inability to sleep. This time, he had Ella sitting beside him the whole time, comforting him, and allowing him to rest peacefully at night for the first time in a long time.
But as she strode down the long and dimly lit hallways, walking through the bustling crowd of soldiers, scientists, advisors, and many others, Ella felt the relief from the last few days dissipate. She was about to head to a local bar with Bucky and some of the soldiers in the 107th when somebody came knocking on her door in the living quarters, saying that Colonel Philips needed to speak with her.
"It's urgent," the messenger had said, making her all the more nervous.
She tried not to let her mind wonder too far into the sea of possibilities of what he could want to see her fore, but she couldn't help it. Maybe he was going to send her home after all. Maybe he was going to tell her it was too much of a risk having an untrained woman living in the war rooms.
Reaching the murky green-painted door, Ella took a deep breath before knocking, her knuckles clicking just underneath the name plaque on the door.
"Come in," she heard Philips call, and she took another breath before stepping inside, keeping her posture as confident as possible.
Peggy was in the office already, standing beside Philips behind his desk whilst he sat in his chair. The woman gave Ella a gentle smile, gesturing for her to take a seat across from the Colonel. Ella and Peggy had become fairly close in the past few weeks, being two of the small handful of women that worked in such close conjunction with the soldiers or higher-ups.
"They said you wanted to talk to me," Ella began, sitting with her hands in her lap. "Is everything okay?"
"Just fine, Miss Madison. Just fine," Philips replied. "I just need to discuss with you your position here."
Ella sighed. "Sir, I appreciate everything you have done by letting me stay here, I know it's an... unorthodox situation taking in someone like me. But I can't go home. I-I can't leave when I'm still not okay or safe."
