So Brer Rabbit tried again. "How do you do?"
But de tar baby, he don't say nothin'.
Den Brer Rabbit scratch one ear with his own behind foot, and la, he go find out why he can't get no ansa.
Den he say sezee, "Oh... what's a matta wit you? I said howdy. Is you hard o' hearin'? I said HOOOOOOWWWWDY!"
But de tar baby, he don't say nothin', an' Brer Fox he lay low.
Brer Rabbit la it's up ter him ter teach de stuck-up stranger some mannas.
An' he say, "Look! F'you don't say howdy time I count three, I'mma bust you wide open!"
But de tar baby, he don't say nothin' an' Brer Fox, he lay low.
So Brer Rabbit he start countin'.
"One!" But de tar baby don't say nothin' an' Brer Fox lay low an' chuckle in 'is stummock.
"Two!" But still de tar baby don't say nothin'. Brer Fox, he lay low wit de fidgets.
"Two and a half... three!"
Brer Rabbit pull his fist back an' blip! He hit de tar baby smack in de nose.
But his fist was stuck dare in de tar.
"Turn me loose!" he say.
"I got 'im, I got 'im, I got 'im!" Brer Fox cheer.
Brer Rabbit, he push an' he pull an' he heave an' he ho.
But de mo he thrash around, de worsah he get, till he so stuck up he can't scassly move his eyeballs.
Brer Fox an' Brer Bear dance out from dare hidin' spot an day feel mighty good.
"Oh how d'you do?" Brer Fox sass.
"Yeah, how you come on?" say Brer Bear takin' his hat back.
"He is wishin' he neva been bawn" say Brer Fox, sezee, "Well, Brer Rabbit, you sho look like a spawt, dressed up in yo swalla tail coat. Don't he look good in dis coat? I ain't neva seen nobody look dat good befo'. Odda folks bidness you minds de best!"
"But don't say no mo'. We seen de rest" say Brer Bear.
"We sho do. He's a pretty smart fella, de folks all say" say Brer Fox.
"Yeah, he know a lotta tricks" say Brer Bear, sezee.
"But he fo'got 'em today. Yeah, he fo'got everything, didn't he, Brer Bear?" say Brer Fox.
