Alana has been a mermaid for as long as she can remember. She doesn't know anything else. She knows she was born in 1966. She knows she was ten when she got lost and fell into the water. She knows that night was a full moon. But she lost all track of time after so long in the water. Except for the full moons. She knew when they were coming. The water buzzed with life and everything felt different. It had affected her the first few times, but after what she can only guess was years, it wore off. Everything did. She was a mermaid in every way. She had no use for words or air. She lived and breathed the ocean.

She doesn't remember walking or running. Talking. Her friends or family. Sometimes she wonders if Alana was the name her parents gave her or if it was given to her by the sea. Maybe she'll never know.
