sam had done a lot of dancing with tina and her other friends. sam didn't really know why, but tina seemed to take her under her wing. she was more confused why that meant tina had to drag sam to tag along with her.

wherever tina went, she dragged sam along with her. literally pulled sam around her house. while tina talked to almost everyone in her house, sam kind of just stood and observed unless she was asked to speak.

"who's this?"

"oh, i'm sam!" she would shout over the music.

"cool. so.."

that's how it would go. she ended up leaving tina to talk on her own, while she snuck in the kitchen to try and find some food. it was going to be a challenge from the couples making out, people finding drinks, and others already eating. the spacious house had turned crammed in a matter of hours.

she luckily was able to grab a bag of chips that looked untouched from drunks. she started eating them, until tina dragged her to go back to the dance floor.

they didn't exactly make it there. they stopped to talk to someone new, someone who tina had been trying to get sam to talk to all night.

"here she is, have funnn!" tina said quickly, and then walking back to her other friends. shooting sam a wink.

"hey there." the guy spoke.

"hey." sam replied.

"so what do you like?" he asked.

"what?" sam asked as the music seemed to get louder.

"i said, what do you like?" he repeated. then the music turned off. a light bit of arguing was heard before gasps filled the room. sam could hardly see around the sweaty teen bodies surrounding her. so, she moved around a bit trying to see what was happening.

a couple dressed as joel goodson and lana, had spilt red punch all over 'lana's' entirely white costume. sam immediately recognized steve as joel from his hair, and then assumed 'lana' was his girlfriend.

his girlfriend stormed off back towards the bathroom, steve following right after her. sam shrugged it off as the music turned back on. right as the music turned back on, the guy she was talking to disappeared. disappeared meaning, he went to find tina.

she took this as an opportunity to head back to the kitchen and eat some more. after eating about a handful of chips, sam decided it was time to go home. she thought for a moment before grabbing the entire chip bag, tucking it under her arm and making her way to the door. that was when she saw steve sprinting out of the bathroom.

although sam didn't particularly know steve (she only knew as much about him as the next person, that he was popular), she couldn't help but be concerned. after eyeing the house for his girlfriend, and not seeing her anywhere, sam assumed that the two had been in a fight.

against her worse judgement, the girl sighed, following steve out the door. she found him sitting on top of his car, and there was no doubt that he was crying. "you got something in your eye? or are you crying?" sam asked as she hopped onto the hood next to him, taking out her chip bag.

steve looked at her briefly, wiping his eyes, pretending that he wasn't crying. he chuckled a little at her comment, looking down at his hands to avoid eye contact. "what's it to you?"

"nobody deserves to feel bad on one of the best holidays of the year." she replied, smiling kindly. "do you want to talk about it?"

the boy shook his head a little, sniffing. "actually.. yeah, why not. um, apparently nancy doesn't love me, and everything is bullshit, including our relationship.." he trailed off, resting his head in his hands.

despite the fact that samantha didn't even know steve, she couldn't help but feel her heart break a little seeing him like this. "hey.." she softly spoke, putting a hand on his back awkwardly, not quite knowing how to console a grown teenager. "look, i don't know nancy, but it sounds to me like she's bullshit."

steve looked up at her with an amused smile, letting out a genuine laugh that made sam smile back. "yeah, she really is." he chuckled. "it doesn't change the fact that i still love her, though." every semi-happy moment somehow turned somber in a matter of seconds.

samantha nodded, looking up at the stars. "you don't have to get over her immediately, steve. everything you feel is normal." they were silent for a moment.

"you are a mystery, mayfield." steve spoke.

"how so?" sam asked.

"nobody knows you. what are you like?" steve asked.

"what do you want to know?" sam continued their on-going questions.

"something...anything...everything...?" steve answered, almost unsure of each word.

"well, i'm a senior...technically the middle child...and, oh, i hate parties." sam joked, steve let out a genuine laugh again.

"how do you know how to do this?" the boy asked, watching as she furrowed her brows, confused. "i mean, calm someone down."

the girl chuckled, looking down at the bag of chips she successfully stole. "i have a little sister. it's kind of my job as an older sister."

"what about you harrington?" sam asked.

"you're right. what about me." steve muttered.

steve shrunk down in his seat, sniffling again as a tear forced its way down his cheeks. sam frowned, looking up at him. "come here.." she whispered, wrapping her arms around steve to hug him.

he melted into her touch, wrapping his arms around her waist as they held each other. samantha had, strangely, never felt so happy; i mean hugging steve harrington on his car, the stars shining above them, the noises of the party far from where their minds were would've been awkward. it definitely should've felt awkward. so why didn't either of them feel awkward?
