Chapter Twelve

"We could take a break from it all!" I say without thinking. Kiba makes a face, wondering what I mean. I don't even know what I mean by that. It just slipped out of my mouth. But now he's looking at me with red cheeks, teary eyes, and parted lips. And I suddenly get an idea.

I continue talking without thinking. "We could run away. Live on our own for a little while." I step closer to him while talking. His face tells me he's overwhelmed with the idea. "Not forever!" I say. "Maybe for a week or something. We could leave a note to our parents that we're okay. We can just get away from all the drama. And skip school. And we could just hang out."

"Just the two of us?" he says. I nod, wondering what he's thinking. "We'd get in so much trouble."

I paused. "Yeah, I guess I didn't really think of that."

There's a moment of silence and I feel like the two of us are much closer than we actually are. He's looking down and I'm looking at the graffiti on the overpass over his shoulder. I feel like our noses would be touching if I moved an inch. But in reality, we're feet apart.

"I wouldn't mind." Kiba says, finally looking up.

I meet his gaze. "What?"

"I need a break. I wouldn't mind getting in trouble after."

My heart starts pounding at the reality of actually running away, even if it's only for a little bit. It sounds like so much fun...but a little scary at the same time.

"Do you want to miss a week of school? Or just get away for the weekend?"

"A week," Kiba replies quickly. He's looking at me with pleading eyes. I can tell that he's already made up his mind. He wants to do this. He wants to get away.

"Where would we go?" I ask.

Kiba thinks for a second then I see his face lit up with an idea. "My family's lake house!"

"What?"

"My family has a cabin on a lake not far from here," he says. "We can take the bus. There probably isn't much food in the house 'cause we haven't gone since the summer. But we could-"

"Is there a boat?"

"A pontoon."

"Can you drive it?" I ask. Kiba nods. "Well I can fish for our food. My grandpa taught me all about it and I know how to safely cook fish too."

"I know how to start a fire," Kiba says. "With just sticks...I did Boy Scouts."

Well, there's probably a lighter somewhere in my house, but I don't say that. He seems proud.

"That's perfect," I say instead. "See, it'll just be a little vacation from life. We'll deal with getting in trouble later." I smile at his sad face. God, he seems so stressed.

He gives a soft smile back, but doesn't hold eye contact. Is he having second thoughts? He can't blame his mom this time. If he doesn't go through with it, he'll only have himself to blame.

"We have it all planned out now, so you'd have to be a chicken to back out." That gets a small smile out of him. "It's a triple dog dare, Kiba."

We hold eye contact until he smiles for real. Nice and wide, toothy grin. "Well...you have me there. I have to if it's a triple dog dare."

We laugh at the stupidity of having this be decided by a triple dog dare. Something we only took seriously in elementary school.

It's so stupid but it worked.

While we're laughing, he pulls me into a hug. I hold on tight and don't let go.

...

We talk some more and decide to leave tonight. Waste no time before either of us change our minds. Kiba walks back to his home and I bike to mine. We agreed to meet at the bus stop near the school in an hour.

I get an empty backpack from my closet and leave my school backpack on the floor in my room. I give it a look and scoff. Stupid school. It's ridiculous how much work they give us. I mean, we're already there seven hours of the day! This break will be nice.

I fill the old, blue backpack with clothes, underwear, socks, and throw my toothbrush and toothpaste in there. I grab a phone charger and a deck of cards. Then I stand in the middle of my room, looking around, wondering what I am missing.

The note!

I have to leave a note!

My school backpack gets a little more attention before I let it rot and die for a week. I grab it and tear out a random sheet of notebook paper. I don't address the note to my dad. He doesn't deserve it. I address it "Hey guys," meaning my siblings as well. I tell them I'm taking a break from school and life with a friend and will be back in a week.

Then I turn the location off on my phone, give my school backpack a hate-filled kick, set the note on the kitchen table, and head out. I think Gaara is home but he must be in his room. Whoever finds the note first will surely tell the others. If my siblings didn't care about me so much, I would say my dad wouldn't even notice me being gone until Monday or Tuesday where the school would call him for me missing class.

Fucking asshole.

I hate that guy.

I can't wait to just get away from this all and spend time with Kiba.
