"Aspen, your never-ending adventures cease to amaze me," I laughed as the three of us headed into the firm from the parking lot. They wanted to try a new coffee shop this morning, and I happily accepted any opportunity not to run into Jackson unless I had to. "And you just be right along with her," I pointed to Will.
He held up his hands with a chuckle. "Hey man, who else if not me, huh? You see how she acts," he pointed to Aspen who extended her hand to push his shoulder.
I laughed.
"How is it that you two have grown so close when we've just met three weeks ago?"
"Well to be fair it's you we've just met," Aspen said. "Will and I met before briefly."
"Yeah but we'd hardly had the chance to get to know each other. Although it was nice to see a familiar face when coming here." Will said as we got into the elevator.
Jackson sent an email last night, telling the three of us to come in at twelve instead of eight in the morning. It was odd, but I didn't question it, I just assumed there was other work she needed to get to. After all, she did leave my place rather late last night. But in turn, about thirty minutes after receiving the email, Aspen sent a text to our group chat, asking about meeting for breakfast. I figured why not; it'd be a good enough distraction from the very beautiful woman who's taken up residence in my head. Who also happens to be my boss.
Per usual, the three of us walked up to Sarah's desk, just before heading into the office, and said hello.
"Hey Sarah," Will smiled at her, walking ahead of Aspen and I. Sarah's eyes were glued to her computer when she mumbled back,
"Hey..." Then, just before Will got his hand on the door handle, she abruptly stood. "Wait!" The three of us looked at her in puzzled shock, then she spoke in a lower tone. "I would heavily advise you not to open that door..."
"Why? What's wrong?" Aspen asked with curiosity, speaking for the three of us. "Jackson's here right?"
"She's in a meeting," Sarah said through a stressed breath. "A very important meeting that I would think twice about interrupting, unless I wanted to be yelled at and possibly fired for doing so."
My brows furrowed, wondering who in the hell could be in there.
"Important people?" I asked, and Sarah nodded slowly with a knowing look,
"Very..."
"The good or the bad kind?" Will asked, and the three of us looked at her again, wanting to hear the answer. But she shook her head while sitting back down.
"I'm not sure I can answer that for you. Just don't open the door, they should be done soon."
About two minutes after she'd said that, and we'd been looking around at each other in mild suspicion, the door handle finally tugged. The three of us stood as if a sting ran through us, pulling at Will first and me last, as we were leaning on the broad desk in waiting.
From Jackson's office out walked two men, dressed in all black formal wear. They were tall and broad from head to toe, and their facial features were anything but welcoming and inviting. It seemed as if the three of us tensed up as the walked passed, and behind them was a man slightly shorter than them in height.
Although, his exterior was intimidating in an entirely different way. His features were charming, and the smirk on his lips could be mistaken for coyness if your lens were naive enough. The man walked with his head held high, as if he were untouchable and the invisible bubble surrounding him was invincible. It caused chills on my arms and shivers along my spine, but not the good kind.
