Upon gradually regaining consciousness, a dull ache throbbed relentlessly in my head, coaxing a soft groan to escape my lips.
Blinking against the dim light filtering into the room, I struggled to piece together the events leading up to my awakening. Memories of fainting flooded my mind, leaving me disoriented and apprehensive.
My gaze settled on Samuel, who was in the midst of maneuvering the TV out of my bedroom. Confusion and curiosity mingled within me, prompting me to summon the strength to speak. "Samuel, what are you doing?" I inquired, my voice hoarse with discomfort.
Pausing in his movements, Samuel turned his attention towards me, his expression a mix of concern and reassurance. With a gentle touch, he approached my bedside, his presence a source of comfort amidst the haze of pain.
"Hey there, how are you feeling?" he asked, his voice infused with genuine care as he placed a restraining hand on my shoulder, preventing me from attempting to sit up.
Struggling against the residual dizziness, I heeded Samuel's cautionary words, allowing myself to remain lying down. "Easy now, you might still be a bit dizzy," he advised, "You need to take your medication, but let's get some food in your stomach first."
As Samuel called out for Gretchen to bring my dinner, his voice carried a sense of urgency.
Once the haze began to lift from my mind, I pieced together the events that led to my current state and couldn't help but wonder how I ended up back in bed. Turning to Samuel, I voiced my confusion, "Samuel, how did I get here?"
His expression softened as he recounted the events, "Mila ran to get Gretchen for help when she saw you faint. They brought you back here to rest."
A pang of guilt washed over me as I realized the worry and inconvenience I must have caused. "I'm sorry," I murmured, feeling remorseful that my fainting spell had disrupted the evening, especially my time with Mila.
Nodding understandingly, Samuel placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, "Don't worry about it, Hazel. Your health is what matters most. Mila understands."
I nodded in acknowledgment, grateful for their understanding and care, yet unable to shake the feeling of regret for missing out on precious moments with Mila.
Samuel recounted the events to me, a sudden realization struck me like a bolt of lightning. "Wait, why are you taking the TV out of the room?" I blurted out, my confusion mounting.
Samuel hesitated for a moment before responding, his tone measured. "Well, Hazel, we've been discussing the possibility that radiation from electronic devices like the TV and phone might have contributed to your fainting spell. So, as a precautionary measure, we're limiting your access to technology for now."
His explanation sounded logical, but a nagging feeling of skepticism gnawed at me. Something about his response seemed off, and I couldn't shake the suspicion that there was more to the story.
Despite my doubts, I forced a nod and a weak smile, choosing to brush off my concerns for the time being. Deep down, however, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and betrayal at the notion that Samuel might be lying to me.
Just then Gretchen entered with my dinner. Upon glancing behind the door I could see a glimpse of a small figure standing behind the door.
"She's been worried about you." Sam whispered next to me, "You fainted right before her eyes, it must've scared her. I think she just wants to know if your okay." He further added.
Awe.
I signaled little Mila to come to me. After a moment of hesitancy from her she shyly made her way towards my bed. Without waiting I picked up Mila and placed her into my lap.
Maybe I was simply drawn to babies but it already felt like Mila was starting to have an impact on me, she was a sweetheart I just couldn't seem to get enough of her.
"Thank you for calling Gretchen for me, you're a lifesaver Mila. Now I'm doing all better just because of you." I whispered to her watching as her face lit up in my arms.
To my utter shock and surprise Mila gave me a hug but that hug was soon short-lived when Wyatt came walking through my bedroom door.
Suddenly my breathing stopped, seeing him made my something inside me stir but not in a bad way, in a good way but yet I couldn't understand why, maybe it was because he was extremely handsome, rich and his presence commanded attention and acknowledgment at his sheer being.
I noted he was also casually dressed which was always a sight to see apart from his formal wear.
"Mila, it's time to get to bed." Wyatt instructed for her.
Glancing at the clock I noticed it was only eight in the night which made me frown.
"But it's only eight in the night and it's a weekend?" I questioned, bewildered by his parenting skill.
Why be such a strict father?
"Mila, bed now." Wyatt ordered strictly.
Mila slipped her way to the ground before making her way out the door. I returned my attention back to Wyatt who was now glaring daggers at me making my heart drop.
"Never you dare tell me how to raise my child." Wyatt spoke harshly to me.
"I wasn't telling you how to, it's-" before I could finish my responce Wyatt cut me off once again.
"Whether I chose to send her to bed at one in the afternoon or eight in the night is none of your business. So keep your unwanted suggestions to yourself." Wyatt calmly spoke but I could see he was deadly serious about what he spoke.
"Your in no condition to be dictating to me how to raise my daughter, you can't even stand on your foot for a day without fainting. On your first day you managed scare the living hell out of daughter as if she needs anymore shit to deal with. I had already said you were unfit to be her caretaker. As of now you're fired." Hearing Wyatt's harsh words made me wide eye.
"Wyatt." Samuel said, his voice conveying a warning tone.
"I-I am?" His words made my heart drop, it was true, after Mila's mother left she stopped talking, obviously the poor girl was traumatized and now here I was adding to those traumatic events by scaring her.
She probably thought I was dead.
The way Wyatt spoke to me it felt as though he was tired of me, as if he could go back in time and leave me instead of picking me up off the street.
I didn't want to be anyone's burden. The way he spoke made it seems I had done something terribly wrong.
As if he would happily throw me out of the house once I finally got better. The way he looked at me made my heart sink, and I didn't know if I could take any more of it.
Looking up at Samuel, who was glaring at his elder brother, made me realize I was also causing a rift between them.
"You're right," I nodded in agreement with what Wyatt was saying, catching both of their attention. "I don't want to be a burden to anyone. I would like to call the police so they can help me locate my family, and I can go home."
Both of their eyes darted towards me as I spoke. Samuel's eyes showed visible shock before he held my face in his hands, while Wyatt glared at me even more intensely before unfolding his arms and marching out of the room.
"You can't leave when you're not feeling well, Hazel. Once you're better, my brother and I will take you home," Samuel responded.
I nodded my head, knowing what needed to be done. If Wyatt didn't want me here, then fine, I would just have to leave without them knowing.
"Now eat your dinner," Samuel urged before leaving me alone with my thoughts.
There were only two things left for me to do: eat my dinner and escape.
